More on "controllable" CNPCs

We, here at NMA, have been informed from an Bis/IPLY source that the controllable CNPCs that JE talked about earlier will infact happen and it doesn't sound that bad either, here's what we heard:
You'll be able to control their inventory to better effect than in FO2, and we're toying with the option of giving orders to CNPC's during combat; basically right clicking on the CNPC, getting a menu of commands like attack X target, stand down, move to X, etc. We're even debating whether those commands are based on Speech skills like Persuade. But control like in an IE game, no way.
That actually sounds really good, it would make the CNPCs more useful and wait there's more, it also seems these CNPCs will have a moral level of some sort:
And yes, I do believe there will be morale for the CNPC's. Some of them will be almost impossible to give orders to just because of their moral fiber (read: stubborness). A lot of the order giving ability of the PC will be dependant on their Persuasion skill and CHA checked against the CNPC's.
Sounds good, I'm getting that X-Com Terror from the deep feeling back...

Real nice :)

Sounds like NWNs system, although I was completely dissapointed with how it worked, Ithink that it could work very well here, if done correctly...

Friendly Fire

Friendly Fire

Unintended consequences has always been a part of projectile fire.
Unintended consequences could apply to all attacks.
Unintended consequences apply to swinging a hammer. Ask any
thumb scarred 'first day' carpenter.

It wasn't 'till I cruized some I'play forum a month or so ago, that I heard,
the cry of frustration -against- friendly fire.

If this collateral damage would be turned off for 'friendlies' would these
game players be "fair" and turn off "friendly fire" for their AI opponents?

I doubt it.

Too risk adverse to chance the 'joy' of super-mutie mini-guns shreading their FEV baptised buds while gambling the same for 'friendlies'.
Too risk adverse to reload a save. Coddle the "C"-NPC's and hopple the AI.

Spoon fed adventurism.

"Silver" spoon fed.

Trust this 'market decision' will not be considered on the same priority level as Real$Time.

"Market Decissions" when micro managing the possible snuffing of 'friendly fire', can be like ...... 'friendly fire', unintended consequences.

Since FO3 is to be coded from the DNA up, nothing is certain, nothing is sacred. I don't see why the easy to frustrate can't be allowed a narrower cone, or zone, of 'friendly fire' as the "C"-NPC's weapons skill increases.

Since these "C"-NPC's will be 'allowed' to be "individuals" or 'stubborn'. There will be the exception when these "C"-NPC's freak out, from fear or frenzy, and burn clips akimbo to all points of the compass.

Oh, would the same mechanics apply to the AI ...... ?

Who knows, 4too? Maybe with the built in morals of the CNPC there will be some that may just have a backstabbing mentality. There may be a few who will put up the facade of friendlies and wait for the opportune time to fill you full of lead to make an impression on their friends the slavers.

Yeah, I'm not holding my breath with that, but one never knows what the collective mind of the developers shall agree upon.

I don't think they are taking out friendly fire, they are changing the AI so that it takes a few steps to the side to get a better burst shot. The smarter enemies would probably do the same.

FO Physics

The PC in FO was a bullet magnet. Moving the PC helped the congestion, and took the heat off one's poorly armored posse. I tended to be entertained by the 'group dynamics', the herding of cats, and Dogmeat, and maxed my parties out.

The NPC's in FO2 might have moved more in combat, more than getting in range of the next hostile. Moving the PC in the first combat turn helped to compensate for the cluster formation one started in.

Sounds good if NPC's could use those spare "points", (Movement points in Real$Time?), to spread out. These Mensa qualified "C"-NPC's might be worth the ticket price.
