More Post-Apocalyptic Goodness!

First time out of the vault
I don’t know if this belongs here or not, but I read the rules for this thread and I’ll go ahead anyway.

How many of you have heard of the Tales from the Afternow series? Those of you who have probably know how cool it is, but for those who don’t... keep reading!

It started with RantMedia (www.rantmedia.ca) and the Sean Kennedy Show. Both of those are worth checking out if you’re into the whole ‘the Government is out to get me and we have to stop them’ thing, but there’s a lot of interesting and relevant information on there. Anyway, Sean Kennedy is one of the (if not, THE ranter) associated with RantMedia and he does a lot of side projects including horror novels and fiction stories.

Tales from the Afternow is an internet audio series chronicling the travels of a pirate radio broadcaster in the very bleak future. The very meaning of time is copyrighted by the corporations that now rule the world... the very same corporations that were responsible for the end of the world.

If this sounds interesting, then I suggest you head over to www.theafternow.com and click on the “listen” link on the subsite menu, scroll down to the bottom of the list and download Episode I: Stream Jack. You’ll have to right click one of the links to the right of the episode title and “Save Target As...” I think you may have to download the 16K quality file because some of the mirrors are currently down...

Once it’s done downloading, clear your thoughts, and make sure you’re in a dark and quiet room. Light some candles if you have to and start listing to the first episode. I prefer listening to them in headphones because it adds a nice effect, but if you’ve got a good sound system then that’s all the better.

Tell me what you guys think!

Light some candles? What is that meant to mean? Illuminated by the cold hard light of a computer screen mixed with the light of a candle? Are we having a romantic dinner with this internet series (or some sort of silly gothic ritual)? Besides, with the amount of college students we have here, and that I have yet to see a dormitory which allows open flames; it's not a very good idea.

Indeed, it’s not a gothic ritual... it was merely a suggestion. It’s by no means necessary; it does add a nice atmosphere, however, even with the glow of your computer monitor. Besides, I live in a dorm as well with no open flames allowed... but it’s fairly easy to get away with lighting a few candles if you know what you’re doing. Yes, kids, you’ve gotta be smarter than the candle! Anyway, give it a listen, it’s pretty nifty!

Actually, the lower quality adds a bit of ambience to it. Granted, the 128k file would probably be better. I’ll search around for more mirrors; I know there has to be some that aren’t listed...

*EDIT*
Ah, here we are... not the best site on the web, but it has mirrors of the higher quality files. http://sktfm.smokehouse.us/tales.htm (mind the ads). You’ll find an episode list on the right-hand side of the site. It’s Episode 732.653.663.398.36.1, the number of the episode is the last number in the sequence, so if the above is episode one, then episode 732.653.663.398.36.2 would be episode 2 of the series. Enjoy!

Hey, thanks a lot! Ego stroking is spiffy! Once you guys have checked it out, don’t hesitate to post back with your impressions!

I listened to the first episode. It's pretty good stuff. I think I'm going to burn these all on to CD's so I can listen to it at work.

A couple of things that bother me though. Like how a laser somehow sets off a nuclear device?

There were defense satellites in orbit to “prevent” nuclear war by detonating a target warhead. However, most of the nations who launched their payload knew of the satellites so the nuclear warheads they launched had failsafe devices that would arm the warhead while in flight... just in case a defense satellite tried to neutralize it, the bomb would detonate in the atmosphere.

Sorry for the double post, but this topic needs to be kicked back to life. At least, it will support my frail ego for a bit longer for some reason. Give this a try people, tell us what you think!

Just to let you know... kicking posts to the top is not an accepted thing to do on most interweb forums.

I am aware of that... which is precisely why I apologized.

At any rate, you seem like a pretty switched on fellow. I think that you might enjoy this series. I checked out your personal homepage, always nice to see other Rush, Dream Theater, and Tool fans lurking around. If you like the progressive genre you should check out a group called Ayreon! Yes, a bit off-topic, but here's a sample...
