Music & copyright...

If I make a Fallout 2 mod, am I allowed to use a song from a band/singer in it? Something old to fit the Fallout theme, of course...

As long as you don't make any money off it, I think it's okay. I'd check it out thoroughly before going at it though. Lawsuits and all :(.

yea u are. your just not allowed to make profit of the game. and not use copyrighted song eather.

Well file sharing of music seems to be illegal, even if people are not making money off it. So I'm not so sure this is "okay".

Hmm... one more question then. What if I use just some parts from a couple of songs to make a new sound file? My idea is kind of like this: a song starts and after a few sec. a sound like channels changing is heard and a part from a second song starts, after a few other sec. that sound is heard again and the third and final song kicks in, but not from it's start and it doesn't actually ends. Actually I have in mind to use this in an intro movie of some sort. I decided what the movie would be, what song parts to use to fit what's shown on the screen better and so on...

Edit:

I found some info on the web, and indeed it says that I can't use a copyrighted song without permission. So, the thing is now to find out if the song(s) is/are copyrighted, which I don't know how to do.

The whole copyright thing is interesting, because technically I think its illegal to photocopy pages of a book, yet they provide copiers for you to do exactly that.

I'm just guessing here, but I would think that clipping part of a song would still be technically illegal. Perhaps the real question is would the copyright owner bother to take action. If it was a few clips in a game made by an indicvidual for fun not profit, I doubt that anyone would take any action, even though they probably could.

I would be cool to have some of the pink floyd stuff from the wall in the fallout game  like the airplane sound in the middle of a battle for example.

But if you want to be perfectly legal then do a search for music that is not copyrighted. Quoting a web page "There is also a great deal of uncopyrighted music being distributed on the Internet, and this practice is perfectly legal. There are also several Web sites where you can download copyrighted music legally. "

Perhaps googe this
http://www.google.ca/search?q=uncopyrighted+songs&hl=en&lr=&start=40&sa=N

I was just looking some uncopyrighted dylan ... hmmm dylan in redding

Hey, thanks a lot for the info.

I guess I'll try my luck then. Maybe I won't bother anybody.

Well, "my mod" is just in the dream phase, but I envisioned a pretty cool intro, if I can say so myself. *looksaround*

the way round it is pick a song that almost everyone will have in their music collection
then the can have a copy of it as long as they own the original.. :)
you'd have to have it as an option in the installer to agree that they had the original and install it or not depending on whether they say yes or no.... that way it's them that is doing the illegal thing if they lie...

Yeah, but unless you got permission you're doing illegal things by copying it too.

One way to do it would be to include a blank sound file as a place holder and then put instructions in the read me as to how to replace the blank file (path, filename etc) if they have the intended music.
