Music labels being sued for copyright infringment?

While the music industry is spending a fortune trying to jail P2P file downloaders, it seems it has an ambivalant attitude to its own piracy record.

Jazz great Chet Baker's estate is suing the major record labels for releasing his music on Canadian CDs without paying.

Apparently the music industry has been taking advantage of the more relaxed attitude to copyright in Canada to release 300,000 songs have been released on CD without compensation.

SEVERAL CANADIAN ARTISTS have formed a group to sue the CRIA (Canadian Recording Industry Association) and the four major music labels EMI, Sony BMG, Universal and Warner for copyright infringment.

This isn't the first time one of the artists took action to try and get what's rightfully theirs, but it's the first time several artists have gotten together to hit the labels, and hit them hard. In this particular case the artists complain about labels creating compliation CD's without actually owning some or all of the songs used. According to Afterdawn, the number of songs the CRIA members allegedly "forgot" about amounts to an astonishing 30,000, which sounds like a pretty bad case of forgetfulness to us. If you use the record labels' "scientifically" established statutory damage amount for infringing copyrighted songs of $20,000 USD, the bill adds up $6 billion.

Personally, I hope they get their butts kicked in court :D

One could argue, that the record labels are the reason why we have so much shitty games today too...

Once "they" saw how much money you can make with dumbed down shit, they exported it to other industries...

I have to deal with copyright holders threatening to sue customers at my workplace every day. I work for a rather small ISP and we receive upwards of 3 to 5 abuse reports per day that we follow up on.

An interesting development is both the pr0n and some of the music / movie copyright holders are asking for a $50 USD compensation for each violation in order to hush things under the table... Of course there is noting legally binding someone to pay that and it would really just serve to incriminate that person without the industry obtaining a subpoena; nevertheless, they are trying just about anything to get around privacy laws. It doesn't seem like they are just trying to make an example anymore, they are trying to turn up cash in their favor.

So oh how I do favor seeing them get kicked in the junk. I don't feel any remorse for them, even after all these years that they have lost money due to the digital age. They are guilty of stealing SO much from musicians over the years. Especially many blues artists in the south. Muddy Waters was found by the Beatles changing light-bulbs at a studio once... He was screwed out of everything by the record labels... Sure he was possibly into underage girls but thats a whole 'nother story.

Reminds me of the case where the scumbag that owns the CCR catalog tried to sue John Fogarty after he went solo for sounding too much like himself.
