First time out of the vault
My initial impression of the game was like many peoples. The vault 101 bit was pretty decent, [spoiler:674e8950c0]though not getting to bring your friend along was a real let down,[/spoiler:674e8950c0] and megaton wasn't bad as a starter city, at all. The sheriff etc. was fairly bland, but Moira was hilarious, and getting a house was sort of cool.
I went to the super duper mart, and had a blast fighting off riders and getting assault rifles and combat shotguns. I sold most and bought the plans to make a rock-it launcher ( yeah I actually liked it at first.. silly but in a fallout 2 kidna way I felt), and has fun shooting plates and bent tin cans at baddies as I did a bit of good old fashoned wandering.
I fastwalked ( I don't mind that feature btw) back to town and sold supplies and repaired, refitted, etc. I returned to the mainquest and tried to head to the next settlement. i was still having a good time, though something was wrong.. I was trying to move foreward but it felt like lots of running through annoying mazes full of random monters, and not much actual interactive rp. I shrugged it off. the game still *looked* and sounded good, and the start was strong. I remembered trapper town and the mazes to get the car part and figured this was the FO3 equivalent, the lull.
I kept playing, and ran through subways full of mirelurks and ghouls and mutants, none of which had much point, except to take me to the next subway "instance." i realized that I wasn't having fun anymore, and chalked it up to having played too much in too little time ( yes I know that is a *VERY* dubious reason, but I desperately wanted to like the game). i went back to it, ran through more subways, and some building and subway mazes, and found another "town" (bigtown), which basically had 3 people to talk to, and which then sent me off to run more mazes then return. That's when I realized what had happened.
I was no longer playing the sequal to fallout 1 and 2, like I has been in the first few minutes. I was playing... Hellgate London.
That's when I started to use walkthroughs and teleport cheats to skip to the few remaining bits of actual rpg ( such as there was) left.
I'm still at it, days later.
I do think that, in theory, it's a decent fallout construction kit, or will be with some mechanics tweaks, but as an rpg, even an "action rpg", it's dismal past, as they say, the first 5-10 hours.
