My .pro files are disappearing

I'm using the .dat verson of master and ctitter but have the unpacked files sitting on my HD to edit, well in my fallout2\data\proto when I put my modified .pro files, I load up the game, check the gun I modified, the stats are the same, exit, find my .pro file deleted which stikes me odd, cause I'm using the same method to replace the knife pic witht the shadow knife, I renamed the are file and put it in fallou2\data\art\inven and it worked, whats the deal?

Your edited .pro files must be changed to read only to stop the game from deleting them. See, you extracted them from the game and change the info. The game knows it has the items built into it, so anything outside of itself it finds it just deletes. Setting them to read only forces the game to use them. Hope this helps....
