My server freezes on drive detection

Sonny, I Watched the Vault Bein' Built!
Ok, So i recently "Borrowed" a 17.5 gig hard drive from my family computer (They had two, and the other was 40 gigs, and they didn't use the 17.5 gig one ever, so they won't miss it)

I just got around to installing it in my server to replace the 2.3 gig HD that was already there. I would have just added it for a total of 3 HD's, but the power supply only has enough connectors for two HD's and the CD ROM.

So these were the specs before the change: (It ran fine)

Proccessor: Pentium 1 @ 120MHz
RAM: 48MB of various sticks/brands
Hard Drive (Primary Master): Fujitsu M1623TAU @ 1.7 gigs
Hard Drvie (Primary Slave): Maxtor 82400D4 @ 2.3 gigs
CD ROM (Secondary Master)

These are the system specs after the change:

Proccessor: Pentium 1 @ 120MHz
RAM: 48MB of various sticks/brands
Hard Drive (Primary Master): Fujitsu M1623TAU @ 1.7 gigs
Hard Drvie (Primary Slave): Maxtor 91303D6 @ 17.5 gigs (I think only 8 gigs is usable now)
CD ROM (Secondary Master)

The hard drive from my family computer ran fine when it was in my family computer, so I don't inderstand why the computer would freeze when I gets to this screen:

Anyone know the possible cause of this mysterious freezing?
The Maxtor HD jumper is set to slave, and the Fujitsu HD's jumper is set to master. They are both in the right location along the IDE cord.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I believe that the hard drive is too large for the motherboard to handle. I might be wrong, but this is simply hardware incompatibility: such an old PC cannot handle such a huge drive.

What drive partition are you using? The family hard drive may be configured for a different one.

Dammit, I think you're right. The drive size is 17.5 gigs, yet the bios says it's only 8 gigs. (I think that was the limit for pre-win98 OS's) Well, thanks anyway.

The partition would not affect the detection of the hard drive.

That would definitely do it. That 8GB ceiling and the boot beyond 8GB points were broken around the time the 300MHz CPUs came out or a bit later.

Thanks anyway for your help guys! I guess I'll have to wait until I have the parts to build another, better server to make use of that 17.5 gig HD.

Before you do that, I suggest you look for BIOS updates for your motherboard.

I remember finding a BIOS update for an old Gigabyte ATV PI MB that supported a 20Gb HD.

I was just about to say that, look for a bios upgrade that should fix the problem..

I would also recommend to move the CDROM to the seconday master and not slave.

you call that a server?

here's my little baby, true is heavy and loud, but it has almost unlimited file serving capabilities.
and it only cost me 600$ to buy it, I can get twice as much selling it for parts.
