My take on the demo as a non-hardcore fallout fan.

First off, I did play the original 2 fallout titles. I completed Fallout 1 but by the midway point of Fallout 2 the constant random pointless battles where wearing thin on me and I never finished it. And I haven't touched either of the games in a long time.

I'm also a much bigger fan of squad level tactics games like X-com/Jagged Alliance then I am of RPGs. When I first heard of Fallout Tactics I was skeptical a best since I didn't see Fallouts combat system (which I always found somewhat dull and lacking) making for a good tactical combat game. The thing that really appealed to me about the game was the fact it was going to support multiplayer something that has always been lacking in other games of this type. But, I never payed any close attention to the development of the game after hearing about it initially.

When I heard the demo was out I downloaded it. I'm really impressed with the game now. The CTB system makes for a great squad level game and keeps the game moving without getting bogged down waiting for a dozen wimpy enemies to take thier 8 steps / swing and miss you one by one. Plus it should make for a excellent multiplayer mode over a LAN since you won't be waiting for the other player. It took a bit to get used to the system though and for the first little bit before I played the training missions I stumbled around in it not really getting the idea of how it should be played. The training missions helped me get a feel for the way it works and I'm having a blast now.

Graphically the game really impressed me since I figured with it being sprite based I was in for a bunch of pixelated ugly sprites running around the screen. Surprisingly the graphics are very well done with clean anti-aliased lines and almost no pixelation evident, very nice. Tactics shows that sprite based gaming isn't completely dead. I dunno about the complaints here about the game feeling too "clean" to be fallout, graphically it looked right to me but then again I haven't been playing the old dithered out titles for the last few years so I'm probably not as picky. I think the problem is somewhat that the art may be slightly different here (diffrent artists) but also that some of the really hardcore fans have mentally filled in the gaps in the old low resolution graphics. For me the graphics are fine, they look good and seem fitting for the enviroment.

Is Fallout: Tactics a RPG -- HELL no. Wasn't meant to be. What it is though is a very good real-time squad level tactics game, probably the best one I've ever played set in the Fallout universe.

This type of cross-genre use of a license is nothing new. Just look at how many iterations X-com has shown up in - Squad Level Tactics Games, Space based "Wing Commander" style game, a upcoming first person shooter, play by email... The only thing they had in common is they where set in the same universe and had links between thier storylines. That's exactly what Fallout: Tactics is. It borrows the setting from Fallout for use in a completely different game genre. Maybe the game style isn't for you, but condemning it because it doesn't fit your vision of what "fallout" is as far as combat and graphical style is well... silly. If/When Fallout 3 is unvieled and it doesn't fit your standards for the RPGS then go right ahead and condemn it but jumping on Fallout Tactics because the combat plays different and some of the RPG oriented stats don't make sense (Charisma for example) is a waste of time.
