As the smoke clears from the barrel of his combat shotgun, Rayne takes a closer look at the man he just shot.

This guy just jumped out of the bushes with a knife in an attempt to ambush Rayne. Rayne pumped a three-round burst into him in a reflex, and now the man's bleeding corpse lies in front of him, his face fixed in a maniacal stare.

Rayne wonders who this guy can be as he bends over and searches for valuables. The guy doesn't look like your average raider, he's too... clean-shaven. He's dressed in leather, though.

Rayne wrings open the guys hand, takes the combat knife and puts it in his belt. He searches on and finds a VERY pleasant surprise: a pouch full of money, at least 15000 dollars. It's not every day you see that kind of money, let alone find it in the desert! He slips the money into his pocket. When he gets to San Diego he'll be sure to buy some new weaponry.

He searches some more and finds a 9mm Glock 17. Rayne wonders why the guy didn't use this pistol against him, but then he checks the clip to find it empty. He sticks the Glock in his belt.

He finds nothing more worth carrying, so he stands up and continues walking. Diego shouldn't be many more miles away now.

A hundred feet away from the corpse, he notices something on the ground. It's... another corpse. A young man dressed in a gray shirt. He looks like he's been peppered by a submachine gun. His whole body is riddled with bullet holes and his shirt is soaked in his own blood.

Rayne wonders if this guy could have been killed by the guy Rayne just shot. But why the hell would he empty the whole magazine into him? If he used that Glock to kill this guy, he's got to have pumped several magazines into him after he was dead, judging by the amount of bullet holes.

Ah well, Rayne thinks. Leave the investigation to others.

Rayne searches the body but finds nothing. Whatever this guy carried has probably been taken by the other guy.

Rayne stands up when he hears a voice.

"Aha! We finally got you!"

Rayne turns to see who talked. His eyes stop at a moustached man standing in a slope with a rifle in his hands. Behind him stands a group of armed men. The man turns to the group.

"You hear, boys? We got'em! (the man turns back to Rayne) Just drop your guns and MAYBE we won't shoot you! And... what the hell! (the man looks at the corpse at Rayne's feet) You shot your buddy! You're so greedy you even shot your friend! You're more of a psycho than I thought, you crazy ass!"

"Uh, I think this is a misunderstanding." says Rayne. "I didn't shoot this man."

"Hey! You sound different... oh! OH! I'm sorry mister! This is a misunderstanding. We're San Diego guards. We're lookin' for two dangerous robbers. Of which... (the man looks down) one is the one you're standing over. We think he should be around here somewhere. You wouldn't have happened to have seen a gray-dressed young guy?"

"As a matter of fact, I have." Rayne smiles. He's right over there.

Rayne points to the other corpse. The Diego guard looks over there.

"Damn me. They're both dead. Did... did you kill them?"

Rayne decides he'll just tell the truth.

"I shot one of them, but that was in self-defense. I think one of them killed the other one."

"Oh. Well. Yeah, well! There's a reward for stopping these two criminals, but you'll have to come to San Diego to collect it. It's just a mile away from here."

"Yup. I was headed to Diego anyway."

"Ok. You care to tag along?"

"Sure."

"Ok, stranger. Johnson, Garrity, Flames and Wang, you will carry the bodies to San Diego. They'll have a proper funeral if they're ever so much murderers."

Four police officers with home-made biers run to the corpses and pick them up.

"Well, then. I'm Sheriff Coyle of San Diego. What's yours, stranger?"

"I'm Rayne."

The four officers return with the corpses. One of the men talks to the sheriff.

"None of them have the loot on them, Sheriff."

The sheriff thinks for a moment, then turns to Rayne.

Rayne looks like he suddenly remembers.
"Oh yeah, i picked up a few bucks from one of them."
He hands the money over to the Sheriff and fumbles for a smoke.

As the party walks towards Diego, Sheriff Coyle and Rayne have a chat.

"Those kids... (the sheriff shakes his head) Spencer and Charlie. i knew them so well. Always little rascals. Clung to each other all the time. And now, when they grew up... robbed the bank, they did. Killed Burt Hyer, the banker. Ran up into the mountains. Their parents were beside themselves. But, the guards had to go after them, and so we did. And it got a fatal outcome."

"Do you think one of them killed the other because he wanted the whole loot for himself?"

"Can't know. But it's sadly probably so."

They could see San Diego in the dusty horizon now.
