I am making a fallout platform-kinda game ( you'd be surprised how easy it is), and now I am facing a moral dilemma. Whether to make it an ordinary 2D platform (like mario), or fake 3D (anyone remember battletoads, double dragon?).

I am also troubled by picking characters, and weapons. I don't know whether to make like a character choice at the beginning (not everyone would like Pipboy as a main char). Maybe even a 2 player game (not that hard either). Which weapons to use, how many weapons per char etc. Or maybe even just unarmed combat (Pipboy has a cool backside kick).

So people (players?) what would you like best?

Well, I think a 2D, 1 player game with 2 player capiblities would ber ideal. That whole "Fake 3D" thing is alright, but that gives you props for a sequal ;-). I'd think you would have the biggest problem facing enemies. You haven't shown us any type of a design doc, so without that we cannot really help you with gameplay or design issues. Make one up and post it. Seriously, this is a good idea and I hope you work on it and release it. Just be careful not to annoy Fergus and his lawyers. They are a little itchy this time of year.

Well...

Most side-scrolling fighting games used a psuedo-3d perspective, probably in part because it worked the best. I'd go with that, personally.

Character choice would be nice, but what would be even better is to start with just the Pipboy and use him to unlock other characters. It's kind of trite, but, again, I think that sort of idea is used often for a reason. As for moves, I'd make weapons character specific. Maybe have the Pipboy fight unarmed, but give Sulik a sledgehammer, or something. I always hated the weapons system used in games like Streets of Rage.

Answering

All the ideas are noted.

I´m right now having trouble with both 2D and fake 3D. In 2D I am having trouble with sprites, but in fake 3D I am not able to make chars jump (then again there are no jump animations either) and I doubt I could think of a tolerable shooting system there. So I think I am gonna go with 2D.

True Raven: With a design doc, do you mean like a doc about my ideas, or a sample of the game?

Doyle: Actually I was thinking of Pipboy being the best char (a special hidden char). And sorry, no Sulik. I don't have Fallout 2 right now and I'm too lazy to draw my images (plus I don't think people would like my drawings), the only reason I borrowed FOT, was to get the images.

What's the weapon system in Streets of Rage?

b-pen: I am using Game Maker. Btw I only found out about it 3 days ago and I already think that Vault Runner 2 was poorly programmed (I couldn't get the first one working).

P.S. Advice is still expected..

RE: Answering

double dragon style moving would be neat :) yaknow how you can move up and down and left and right.. or is that fake 3d... =]

RE: Answering

[font size=1" color="#FF0000]LAST EDITED ON Sep-02-01 AT 01:53AM (GMT)[p]In Streets of Rage, there were weapons hidden in objects or in the hands of enemies. When you broke the object containing the weapon or knocked out the enemy, the weapon was dropped and you could pick it up and use it. The problem is that picking the weapon up left you vulernable and it could happen accidentally. On top of that, it was far too easy to have the weapon knocked out of your hands.

RE: Answering

that happens in double dragon II and battle toads i beleive...

okay.. thanks.

I just downloaded GameMaker. You don't mind if I play around with it, won't you? :D
Anyways, if you're, making an action game, why not go overboard and turn it into an RPG? There are loads of good, freeware programs out there..

http://ambrosine.com/resource.html <-I'm hoping you already know about this site. Did you find Game Maker here?

I can't give really useful advice.. other than to take a hint from Interplay's current dilemma. Screw Eye Candy. Focus on playability. A good plot, immersive gameplay.. that's all we need.
Isn't that the reason why Wasteland, though created more than a decade ago, is still an enjoyable game to play?!

Work in progress...

I have decided to do 2D, sorry in fake-3D (yes, I meant battletoads and double-dragon) there were just too many movement problems. Also I'd like to put up a query of whether making it unarmed/shooting game.

Doyle: don't worry I wasn't even planning to use that kind of system, it would overload the engine anyway.

b-pen: I won't mind if you play around with it.
I got the game maker from the official site, (don't remember the url, I just searched for it).
And don't worry I won't focus on eye candy. I have actually thought of a pretty good storyline (sorry, secret), with actual puzzles not just "pull this lever to open that door". And playability was already the first priorities.
Making an RPG - tempting, but I haven't got the time right now, school just started. But if you want to play around with it, I could help only with minor things. I might have found the perfect engine for it... check Exploration v5 on the link you gave me. It even specifically says that you can make games like fallout with it.

Planned features

Main character capable of sneaking, jumping... etc.
A well built storyline with turnarounds and stuff.
A fast paced game.
2 player head to head mode (I can't add cooperative cause that way the storyline wouldn't work.
More to come.

I have the game already created in my head, but I suck at drawings - so I might need a background artist/resources (I can't import that from the game).

P.S. As I said I don't have time right now. The school has just started and because of the repairs I now have to go to night shift. So now my schedule looks like this:
a) wake up
b) go to school
c) watch TV/play with the computer/go play basketball/soccer
d) go to sleep
Notice there already isn't room for homework...

So now you people have to annoy me a LOT, so that instead of doing c) I would bother to design the game (not forget about it).

Annoy me at "Peeter@ikilledkenny.co.uk"

P.P.S. If you annoy me enough I will post the beta demo up soon. During the next three days. The beta demo will only show the moves of the character and shooting some enemies. It won't reveal anything of the storyline. And I will post it here.

No answer?

As there has been NO annoyance during the past five days, I am now officially freezing the platform game production (and due to the unexpected AI problems I've encountered), too bad I really grew to like the storyline. I might still finish the two player head to head version. It will (hopefully) include sneaking (stealth-boy), dodging and split-screen view. But for now I would like to see the weapon preference.

One melee/unarmed and one shooting weapon possibly. They can (and maybe even should) be character specific.

P.S. If I don't get any answers to this then I will think that noone would play the game anyway and will stop the production entirely.

RE: No answer?

Melee weapon - I can't decide between cattleprod and sledge hammer. Maybe there will be a cattleprod powerup with limited charges?

Shooting weapon - hmm. Assault rifle (military style, although not very powerful, it is automatic weapon). Powerups may include rocket launcher (area damage), laser rifle (shoot-through style), and .233 pistol.

RE: No answer?

With weapons, I meant more like by type, either smgs, pistols, rifles, miniguns etc. Because every weapon type requires an unique set of animations (for walking, shooting, standing, ducking). And they would just overload the engine. So please us a type not a specific weapon.

I might still add upgrades, but they would be more like increase damage maybe.

The laser-weapons shoot-through style might be pretty cool. I might just use that. But the laser won't be a default weapon.

RE: No answer?

Rifles, then.

RE: No answer?

Hmm, if it's not to big of a problem, Pistols and big-sized weapons (laser rifles, bozars, flamers) that way, You could have all sorts of small handguns, smgs (I know it would look weird but who cares?) AND machine guns and such.
