I've currently got some ideas for Fanfic but I need all the info I can possibly get on Richard Grey and Mutants (Yamu I know you know all about this). Anything anyone can give me will be appreciated.

Ok here's some basic stuff that i immedatly think of

-Richard Grey was the master, the most obvious right?

-If you studt both Fallout 1 & 2 you will find this. You can acces some information on Richard Grey from the mutant computer. You can also acces information on a character called "Boyarsky," Some people suppose that this is Harold because he says that he comes from a vault and one of the people thrown out of Vault 8 (Vault city) was also called "Boyarsky". This is because it is one of the BIS staffs names but something could be done abput this in a fan fiction.

-The other person thrown out was calle Richard Merua (Forgive me for speeling errors in his name) Now if Boyarsky was changed to harold doesn't it make sense to change Richard Mereua to something else ie. Richard Grey.

-If the above theory is true and the vault followed both harold and Grey then it would explain there hatred of Mutants and Ghouls. Also the reason Harold moved to Gecko from the Hub was because he wanted to be near his true home Vault city

-A mutant turns out superior and intelegeant if he is not radiated much. if he is radiated then he turns out like anormal dumb trooper which is the motive for capturing vault citeznes

-Mutants rely mainly on Big guns and energy weapons that can be handled easily with their superior strength

-they capture caravans but the pepole think deathclaws are responsible.

If you need more i'll think harder, hope this helps.
Good to see new fan Ficers

Thank you Fang. There were some things in there I didn't know and they will help greatly, but alas, I still need more. If you or anyone else knows anything more please post it. Of course I'll acknowledge you in the credits too. Maybe answering some questions will help jog someone's memory?

- About what year did Boyarsky and Richard Mereua get tossed from Vault 8? How many others went with them?

- I know about Vault 8, Vault 13, and Vault 15. Can anyone tell me anything about the other Vaults?

- Harold always said that Richard Grey was brilliant. What did Grey do? Doctor, scientist, unknown, other?

Thanks.

[font size=1" color="#FF0000]LAST EDITED ON Dec-24-00 AT 12:33PM (GMT)[p]You forgot the vault under LA. You could probably find the number in the holodisk that Mrs stapelton (in the library in the HUB, which I think id phoenix) sells you. Also there's one in bakerfield (Necropolis)
I think Grey was a doctor.

Yeah Grey was a docter i think. Well i'll have more info for you tommorow i'm getting a hard drive for christmas and i can use that to reinstall fallout and find out some stuff.

I remember something about Grey and Harold wandering the Wastes for a time before Grey became the Master and Harold became a Ghoul. Does anyone know what they did during that time and why they went into the Vats?

It's here

Half of the Intro is posted on the FanFic section now for any and all who care. Give me some feedback if you don't mind and thanks for you help.

Sorry for my failure to respond, but my comp cut out on me again and I could only run from DOS, an OS which hates me as much as I hate it.

I see that, for the most part, you have a lot of what you need. I've really been out of it for a few days, but I'll get back to you soon with anything that's been left out.

But for now, I'm headed over to the Fanfic board to see what you're talking about. I may not have to post anything at all...

Better late than never...

Well, between school matters, intermittent sleep, computer problems, and seemingly misplacing about 30 points of I.Q. sometime between December 1 and now, I finally found the time to hammer this out and post it.

*****************************************************************

Richard Grey: He was a brilliant man, a doctor and a philosopher, who led the expedition in which Harold was turned into a ghoul. He is just a little older than Harold. The expedition was to the Mariposa Military Base, or, as we know them, the vats. They encountered heavy resistance from defense robots that had been set in place at the time of the war, and, by the time they got to the lower levels, only Grey, Harold, and two people named Francine and Mark were left. Francine was taken out by a robot, and Mark was injured and sent back to the surface.* Grey and Harold forged on to the vats, but a robotic crane knocked into Grey and sent him hurtling into a vat of F.E.V. Harold blacked out, but through methods unknown even to him, he somehow found himself in the desert when he woke up. There, he was picked up by a caravan and taken back into town (presumably the Hub?). He was already mutating.

* To this day, it is not know what happened to Mark. I have heard interesting speculation that perhaps he and Francine were melded with Grey in the creature known as "the master", but it seems unlikely, as Francine was already (most probably) dead, and Mark would probably not be stupid enough, however injured, to seek refuge inside the military base.

F.E.V. : The "acid bath", as described by Harold, that Richard Grey got knocked into, was actually a massive vat of the forced evolutionary virus. This virus was brought about through U.S. government biological research.

Officially commissioned September 15, 2073 (4 years before the advent of the war), the pan-immunity virion project's (or PVP's) original purpose was to provide a countermeasure against China's biological weapons. By 2075, U.S. scientists assigned to the PVP decided that the best way to counter china's biological agents would be to engineer an impliment that would render DNA insusceptible to viral infection. Only a year later, early animal experimentation with such a substance produced some... interesting results, I.E. accelerated growth rates in test subjects, coupled with increased brain activity. In the interests of national security, the government moved a team on-site and took over the project, now dubbed the F.E.V., or forced evolutionary virus, project.

In 2077, the year of the war, the FEV project was all but completed, with lab tests yielding a success rate of nearly 100%. Average increase in size and muscle mass was charted at 60%, and the "protential intelligence," whatever that is, was increased by about 200%. At this point however, the virus had still not been tested on humans. To further testing, the military constructed a facility at the Mariposa military installation, or, as we know it, the military base. Here, the military began testing on human volunteers. (The know history of the U.S. military up to the time of the war leads me to question whether all of their test subjects were truly volunteers...)

The Mutants: Humans who have been dipped in the forced evolutionary virus. As with all creatures, the effect of the mutation is more favorable if the subject has a low rad count. Generally though, any given soldier in the mutant army will be of lower-than-average intellect, but be of high physical prowess, with heightened senses. They are, however, believed to be all sterile. This was showed in early government tests on flatworms, and also on vertebrate mammals. It was also indicated in a mutant autopsy report by Vree, head scribe of the Brotherhood of Steel, circa 2160.

The Master: When Richard Grey fell into the vats, he was subjected to a massive overdose of the forced evolutionary virus. It is not known how long he was in the vats, but after he dragged himself out (which, considering the size of a vat, would be a colossal undertaking in itself), he hacked into the base computer and turned off the robots. He also began to record his findings. After 23 days*, he began to notice mutations manifesting themselves, beginning with a festering and peeling of the skin. For the first month or so, he was unable to walk, and was in incredible pain. Over time, he began to regain his strength. He also, by chance, discovered that he had the ability to consume a creature and take it's mind in his.

Being that Richard Grey was an incredible mind, and a doctor and philosopher, his curiosity began to get the best of him concerning the medical and physical effects of the FEV. He began conducting experiments on animals, and slowly came to think that this "glorious unity" was the most viable future for mankind. By then (his 112th-134th days* out of the vats), he was hideously mutated, had developed a fixation that bordered on the ferverantly zealous with this "unity", and considered himself to be, in his own words, "more than human." Most of what had been Richard Grey was gone, lost or buried deep inside the twisted abomination called the master.

Somewhere around his 172nd day out of the vats, the Master had discerned the exact process he has undergone from information that he obtained through a neurolink with the military base's computer. (I would not mention this fact, except that it presents an argument that the Master can control his own growth and evolution, or at least evolves by a process that is extremely efficient and functional.

The master's first few attempts at creating mutants were utter dissappointments - large, dumb things. He consumed them only for fuel. Then, between his 199th and 236th day* out of the vats, he succeeded in creating a successful mutation, ascertaining that the others had failed due to their high radiation count. Through a process still unknown to me**, the Master had initiated the mutant into the unity. Over the next month and a half*, he focused on creating an army to unify all living creatures, or in layman's terms, to dip everything living thing on the wastes, and on locating large amounts of subjects to increase the numbers of his mutant army.

Around this point, the master decided that a mobile body was too limiting, and decided to search out a location with a greater supply of bio mass (for sustinence, I think), and a larger store of knowledge (he had learned all he could from the Mariposa facility's computer). As we all know, he/she/it eventually settled on the Vault located beneath the CoC cathedral.

From here, he masterminded the massive campaign of the unity, until he was taken out by some belligerent bastard in blue and yellow pajamas who just refused to look at things from a different perspective :-)

* I gave the notation of time in days because it seemed the most likely time frame for the Richard Grey's audio diary, from which I got much of my information, to take place in. It seemed unlikely that it could be in months, and impossible in years (note, the log entry for the first successful creation of a mutant was 199-236, and it had not even been 100 years since the war). It is possible, however, that the diary was taken in some kind of military time, or perhaps in a different kind of time index.

**It doesn't seem possible that the mutants were unifed simply from being dipped. If that were the case, all creatures that had ever been dipped would be "unified", and this was not the case in the government FEV research. It is possible that the unity is something akin to the borg collective, but if that was the case, then why would some mutants be smarter that others? In any case, I can discern from the fact that the mutant army is based around a command structure that the nature of the unity is not as most percieve it to be.

On the FEV virus:

Prototype Panimmunity Virion Project

In the hopes of countering the current bacteriological and viral agents employed by the
Chinese government, we have manufactured a virus fragment consisting of ribonucleic
acid (RNA) encased in a protein-lipid sheath. This virion contains a specially arranged
sequence of radiated amino acids (RAA) that are capable of attaching to non-specific
binding sites on deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) and force a non-replicating mitosis to
occur. The resulting host cell is left with a quadruple-helix DNA structure.

Early tests are promising. The virion easily penetrates the cell membrane and attaches
directly to the host DNA in the nucleus. Mitosis of the structure begins almost
immediately. Cytokinesis is prevented by controlling the disposition of the kinetochore
fibers during anaphase. The entire mitotic cycle lasts approximately 2 hours, although
phenotypical expression of the new structure may take days or weeks to become
apparent.

In addition to an effective immunity to bacterial and viral agents, the quad-helix structure
is almost entirely immune to errors introduced in base pairing during replication due to
multiplicity of the base sequence. Radiation-exposed tissue showed no mutation in the
base sequence and protein synthesis mechanisms in the ribosomes were unimpaired.

Over 80% of the samples tissue contained quad-helix DNA. Most affected was muscle
and bone tissue, as well as secretory cells, as these cells seem most receptive to virion.
Sensory cells are the least affected. Surprisingly, even normally non-replicating nerve
cells and nonsomatic cell were induced to begin mitosis. Further experiments will be
necessary to determine the results on these cells.

Log:

*Log Date March 21, 2075

Major Barnett has ordered experiments with batch 10-011 of panimmunity virion, which has ben renamed FEV, for Forced Evolutionary Virus. His main concern is with the side effects of the quad-helix structure rather than its effect of replicative stability. He believes the new structure ist the next logical step for mammalian nuclei. Experiments with single-celled organisms is a great success. While their basal metabolism appears unchanged, their immunity to infection and radiation is exceeding all earlier expectations.
Addendum: chloroplasts seem unaffected by the virion. Further experiments oin plant cells have been canceled by order of Major Barnett.

*Log Date May 9, 2075

We infected several species of flatworm with FEV. Within hours the wormas had increased in size by 28%, and 39 seperate viral contagions wee resisted by the population. Each sample was allowed to continue for several generations, and the new DNA structure was successfully passed on to worm's progeny, although only asexual reproduction was noted in the samples. Experiments with insects have had less success. Mafor Barnett has postponed these experiments until further notice.

*Log Date Jue 30, 2075

Several lab strains of white mice have been infected successfully with FEV. Again, anincrease in size was noted within hours, and after 9 days all mice had stabalized at 31% larger than the control group. Dissection revealed the most increase in size in striated muscle tisssue and certain internal organs. such as the liver, heart, and kidneys. In a surprising finding, the infected mice were fount to run mzes in less than half of the time of the control group. More testing will be needed to confirm this finding as significant.

Log Date November 9, 2075

We have infected 218 rabbits with FEV. Half of the subjects were implanted with electrodes to monitor EEG activity before and after the infection. Increased electrical activity in the brain was noted in 3.2 seconds (on average) after infection. Again, the typical size increase was noted. Howerver, increased aggression and posturing (especially among males) was noted as well. Sacrifice and profusion yielded brain tissue that showed increased dendritic connection, especially in the limbic system and frontal cortex.

*Log Date January 12, 2076

With batch 11-011, we have improved the mitotic cycle efficiency by 43%. We have infected 53 racoons with the new strain. In addition to the now expected size increase, behavioral tests confirmed an increase in intelligence and manual dexterity by 19 points on the Schuler-Kapp index. Unfortuanately, several subjects escaped confinement and had to be hunted down and dispatched. Major Barnett ordered the remaining subjects terminated. Two pairs were unaccounted for.

*Log Date May 13, 2076

We have spliced several new gene sequences, supplied by Major Barnett's advisory team, into FEV. With batch 11-101a, we infected 23 dogs of both pure and mixed breed, and all experienced nearly immediate growth. The larger size was accompanied with increased aggressiveness, while no significant intelligence increase was noted. We plan to attempt crossover of 92 allele pairs with batch 11-011. All subjects were terminated after 14 weeks of study.

*Log Date October 4, 2076

The crossover has been completed and 15 chimpanzees were infected with batch 11-111. Growth and immunity levels are unprecedented. Attempts to induce cancers in the subjects through radiological and chemical agents were not successful. Increased aggressiveness have led to isolating the subjects. Two subjects suffered violent epileptic seizures and died. All remaining subjects terminated.

*Log Date January 7, 2077

Major Barnett has ordered transfer of all FEV research to the Mariposa Military Base. He plans to continue the project experiments on volunteer subjects. I am against this, and would like it noted here that research on human subjects is not recommended by myself or my staff.

On the Mutants:

*Initial Observations

This is truly amazing. Some of the Knights on a patrolling expedition came across an
unusual creature. This creature appears to be humanoid, and quite possibly was once of a
human state. However, there are many differences in the structure of this creature than
that of normal humans.

In the initial investigation of this creature, it is discovered to have a cellular structure
akin to that of humans. Before any possible decomposition can take place, I am taking
down the statistics of this subject.

*Statistics of Subject A:

Height: 3.2 meters
Mass: 363.21 kg
Gender: Indeterminate
Skin Colour: Predominantly gray with tints of green under the current lighting system.
Uncertain if this is due to decay of exposure in the wastelands. Note: the skin is
extremely tough with respect to scalpels.

Mass Breakdown:
Muscle Mass: 77.41%
Bone Mass: 10.23%
Fat Mass: 3.02%
Tissue Mass: 9.34%

Cellular Structure:
Cells undergo cellular division at an increased rate. Mitosis occurs at a rate 15%
quicker than that of normal humans.
Cellular structure appears to be highly similar to humans. Genetic structure shows a
strong correlation between the subject and Homo Sapiens. Possible a mutation from the
nuclear and biochemical agents remnant from the war.
DNA strands appear to be very complete. All recessive genes for ailments appear to
have been eradicated from the system.
The RNA strands also appear to have been manipulated to allow for a greater
transmission of signals.

*Initial Hypothesis

Based on the increased size of the neural transmitters and synaptic receivers, I would
hypothesize the subject had acute reflexes and heightened senses. Based on the reports
the knights gave of the area in which the subject was discovered, barren, high radiation,
extremely high concentrations of chemical agents, it is a wonder the subject survived as
long as it did. Performing tests to determine possible cause of death.

*Results from tests conducted upon Subject A:

Visual Inspection:
Black powder burns near the are suggest possible bullet.
1.2 cm lacerations upon the calf of the right leg appear to have been made by teeth. Will conduct test for possible Rabies.
Skin dried out and flaking. Possible exposure

Test Results:
Radiation Count: 12 rads.
Rabies test: Clean
Hydrochloric Gas: Clean
Chlorine Level: .07%
Sulfuric Content: .02%
Phase Shifting Virus: Clean
Gamma Cyclotronic Virus: Clean
Forced Evolutionary Virus II: Severe overdose

*Hypothesis

Based on my observations, I would hypothesize that the test subject has been killed in a
severe fight of at least two people and three animals the size of dogs. What is truly
astonishing is the extent of viral infection in the subject. I had read once that some
pre-war scientists were conducting experiments with such a virus, but all of the research
notes were destroyed.

Research into this virus has lead to many interesting discoveries. The test subject has
gained many of its mutations from the overdose of the virus. This would account for
enhanced muscle and bone structure. Additionally, the recessive genes which are
commonly found in humans have een manipulated in such a way as to bring about the
best possible combination. While the process by which this happens is uncertain, it does
have some severe side effects. Chief among them is sterility. The test subject would have
been unable to reproduce with any creature, whether clean or mutated. Other side effects
include an alteration of pigment of the epidermis. The life expectancy is increased by
10%. Intellect is decreased in this strain by 30%.

*Conclusions
Based on this information, I would extrapolate that we could simply outlive these
mutants. However, based on the fact that these mutants have a super high concentration
of the virus, it stands to reason that there could be some place which is creating them. As
to where they could be, I cannot hazard a guess.

Miscellaneous:

The Military has deemed it necessary for us to research further in-depth the effects of
wave technology upon living organisms. We have taken light and sound as the basis of
our studies. By manipulating t amplitude of the light waves and magnifying the
frequency, we have been able to get lasers which will cut through a few feet of steel.
Unfortunately, the power to do such a task has not yet been fully developed. We have
other scientists looking into this.

(While this is not necessarily relevant to any topic discussed here, I find it interesting in that it gives a basis for specualtion that energy weapons weren't perfected until after the war, perhaps by the B.O.S.)

Thank you very much. It seems that my story will coincide with what "really" happened after all! This is a good thing for all the purists out there that will string up anyone who besmirches the name of Fallout and for me because my FanFic is headed in the right direction and I won't have to change gears yet...

Heh, what can I say?

RE: You forgot one...

There's also Vault 12, located under Bakersfield, or, as it is better known on the wastes, Necropolis. It is very possible that Set (leader of the ghouls) was a member of this Vault, as ghouls have amazing lifespans.

The speculation on the wastes is that Vault 12 failed, and that is how the inhabitants within mutated into ghouls. In fact, it is utterly possible that every singly ghoul inhabitant of Necropolis came from Vault 12.
