Net advice

Ok, I am curious if you folks have any suggestions or advice.

I am working on a story in which a number of people are killed and their deaths are broadcasted over the internet. How might the government ban such a broadcast and how might the person broadcasting circumvent such government restrictions?

Hopefully someone more creative than me will come up with something, but long story short - at the present time the government couldn't stop anyone, and no one would really need to circumvent them. They could stop a major company from doing it by threatening legal action, but they couldn't stop an anonymous user from doing so. There isn't any technology in place that would allow the government to stop anything from being sent across the internet, which is why you can get mp3's, warez, and porn without any trouble whatsoever.

A site like Suprnova.com is right out in the open, with every game, movie, software product and more available for download (well, bit torrent to be technical), and there isn't much anyone can do about it. It would be the same for your broadcasts.

Well, as for how the government might regualte this... We'd need to know, are we talking murder or or more like... video's of people who who commit suiscide after several hours of being forced to watch the Lifetime channel.

The guv'ment could try flooding the site with traffic, millions of users.
That might cause tham some problems.

Well the story is basically built on an idea of someone televising murder over the internet in the hopes of selling advertising. By word of mouth the site becomes popular.

I know some countries have been able to regulate some internet traffic. But these folks would be broadcasting from multiple locations in countries outside the US.

I would imagine Yahoo or Google could stop linking to that site, no?

One would think so, however if their was a way to make profit by keeping the link there, then I'm shure the greed motivation would kick in, then who knows... (might be interesting to incorperate that into your story)

PS. Post your story here, or e-mail it to me when your done. sounds pretty kick ass.

I know some countries have been able to regulate some internet traffic. But these folks would be broadcasting from multiple locations in countries outside the US.

Those countries control it by either owning the infrastructure (ie phone lines, data cables), limiting computer sales/access, or laws regulating what is and isn't allowable. Over here the first two are corporate/private ownership, and the US has barely any laws relating the the internet besides obvious ones like child porn.

Not unless the government forced them to, which it legally can't. Yahoo and Google are in it for the money and they would be losing out to a competitor if they blocked the site from their seach engines.

They could try to DDOS the site as Big_T said, or they could track down the owners like they currently track pedophiles. They could do plenty of "real world" things, but nothing as far as affecting a broadcast.

Sorry guys, but I think it's a good rule of writing to keep major stories private until you feel they are ready to be released.

That said, if someone was making money through advertising, selling ad space on a internet site in which someone was regularly getting murdered, than I would think that the motivation for murder, money, would make anyone involved in the broadcast an accessory to the crime itself.

I would expect that the government would go after those who are actually doing the killing. They would go after the owner of the site. But they might actually go after the publisher. For instance, if a publisher was abetting a crime, the government could enjoin them to stop participating. But if they are broadcasting offshore, that woudl be hard to enforce.

With the advent of peer to peer networking, there is no way to stop it. A friend downloaded Daniel Pearl's mrder within days of the tape reported being released. If I hosted the video on my server and only streamed it, then the government could request that my ISP pull the plug on my connection. If the video is hosted outside the US, there is nothing the government could do. They would have to call every ISP in the US (for example) and have them null route the IP in question. It is unlikely that the ISPs would care or comply in this situation. Since there are ways to rip streaming media and peer to peer networking, once someone hosts the video, it can be spread rapidly through a variety of methods. I hope this helps and let me know if you need more information.

There is a story similar to this in Hellsing.

Check it out, and it might give you some ideas. It's rather interesting.

Well, they could take away his server name. In other words, they could try to remove whatever his site's name is from nameservers. They could also try to have him kicked off the internet through his ISP, because everyone needs an ISP. Then they could finally ask other ISPs to ban his IP. Those are some internet technical things they could do.

it also sounds a little like videodrome. but different.

will they get murdered with the advertised product or WAT

Uh Uh I have a major useful idea!
No serious! Ok here it is:
The evil gouvernement makes an pact with the evil organisation of Microsoft, that will create an secret security patch for windows, that downloads inmediatly after connection to the internet (c'mon I bet they can do that), which will filter and ban distinctive media streams...!
(Ain't that genius?)
And to work against that.. .well he could be a major hacker and write a program to undue that..

oh my, a serious helpful advice, From John's Volition.. to your service

Thanks for the advice folks. I will have to do some more research on this. Sorry if I am not offering more insight into the plot but I am still working out the details of the story.
