New modder needs assistance.

First time out of the vault
Hi! I am interested in becoming a modder for fallout 2. I would like to start soon but I have no idea where I should start. I have to admit that the tutorials are a bit confusing. Is there any other resource I could learn from or does anyone tutor?

I am afraid that I cant learn via reading. I am strictly a visual learner. Besides, most of these tutorials already assume I know what scripts, or various tools are.

For example

"How do I use mod runner?" is a question on the link you sent me.
The tutor explains how to use it.

What the tutor dont explain is:

What is modrunner? (I assume it runs mods)

Why would I want to use it?

Then other links have similar methods.

"How do I merge a map" Instead of

What is map merging and why merge?

I need either a video on youtube showing how to make a simple mod or an example of a simple mod being made.

"I am going to make a character called greg, and I will give him a new suit and a new weapon."

"Step one."

"Open your hex editor and.."

Do you know of any tutorials like that?

Then you're in a world of hurt for Fallout modding. Sadly, information is scattered all over the place and trial & error/experimentation are what it takes to get anywhere around here. It's a shame there isn't simple, detailed documentation on all this, but that's life. I always had plans for writing a very nice detailed modding tutorial (pics, walking through creating some scripts). That never happened, of course, and the fact that it has taken me over 2 years to release my next RP update, basically means this guide will never see the light of day.

Thats a shame about the guide.

I would really benefit from a simple little run through PDF of how to create a character and give him dialogue, a weapon and to place him in a little shack in a new area on a map..

I wonder, if I paid someone to make a tutorial for the benefit of the community how much would they charge?

I mean, I am not that smart I must admit, but I am creative and I love Fallout. I would really like to have my ideas come to life and for some of the community to enjoy my ideas. I simply dont know where to start..

Learn to map THEN chara creation? Vice Versa? Ugh, its so frustrating.

I will try to persevere however with what materials I have available, then I will try to make my own video tutorials for youtube so the younger generation can continue to enjoy Fallout 2 mods.

Determination, patience and willingness to learn are half the battle with Fallout modding. I do wish you the best of luck and if you run into issues along the way, don't hesitate to come back and poke our brains.

If you are more design oriented, then why not share that creative knowledge with other modding teams? No need to put effort into areas (scripting/mapping) that you have little experience in.

There are many aspects of Fallout modding. First and foremost, you should decide what you're interested in - if you want to tweak Fallout or Fallout 2 (that's a huge difference actually), like adding/replacing art or adding extra weapons/items, you'll need to learn other skills than if you want to add a new quest or a new area entirely.

Assuming you want to create a new area with new characters (like you said - a new char with some items, some dialogue in a new shack), I'd start playing with the Mapper first. In the Mapper package there is a PDF from F2 devs explaining some of the things of how it works.

As you learn to build maps in the mapper, I'd suggest you design your mod thoroughly - start very small - like a single character in a single house built on an existing map. When you know exactly what the house should look like, what the character will have to say, write the character's dialogue. I advise you against using any dialogue editors.

Then check out the Fallout Modification FAQ. Although a lot of info found there is outdated, there's still plenty of valuable knowledge on prototype building, graphics editing and scripting.

With that, you should be able to build your shack on an existing F2 map, build a new NPC prototype and place it there, adding some items and stuff. Then grab a copy of FSE (Fallout Script Editor), read all available scripting tutorials, take a look through the original F2 scripts and try your hand at it.

Sounds easy, but it's not. Anyway, good luck with your project and remember that design is key - without design you'll have difficulty getting anywhere at all. Also what Killap said. If you have difficulty finding answers to your questions, ask them here.

Maybe learn to read first... :P Go to the tutorial page and read through the threads, stuff like this takes time. Anyone who made anything worthwhile for Fallout did it the hard way, persistence and patience.

As others said its essential to read up the mod guides around NMA.
However I would show you some of those I find the most helpfull for my scripting tries. They ended up on the Fallout modding wiki too.

A nicely detailed tutorial from the Miria mod maker.
http://falloutmods.wikia.com/wiki/Dialogue_scripting
A little head up on how the dialogs are working
For graphic editing all I can say with patiance you can do magic here check .Pixote.'s tutorial.

If you go for scripting get the updated scripts for the mapper btw some of the original scripts have comments in them telling what they will do.
