New monitor

Still Mildly Glowing
I am thinking about buying a new monitor. Can anyone recommend a good one? I want a CRT one and not an LCD one. Right now I am thinking about getting a NEC brand monitor. Also, my budget is about $300.

In my humble opinion
You should get an LCD,
Sure, it may cost a million,
But it's superior to CRT.

It has sharper picture, better colors
And is very chic.
Connecting three of them together
Is awesome for Il-2 Sturmovik.

My experiences with LCD monitors have not been that good. I do not find them to be good for gaming either. Can you recommend a good CRT monitor?

In my experience, any of the new CRT 17" monitors are pretty good. I bought a brasilian one about a year ago and it works just great.

Just make sure is not an old model.

I'm not sure what they are called, but there are crystal clear LCD screens. The 19 inchers are extra expensive, but if I had the cash, I would definitely buy that over a new crt. I think Samsung just made a new set of them, too.

For the price of one LCD 19 inch monitor you`ll buy three CRT ones, it´s much more cost effective that way. 19 inch should be the minimum.

LCD ... Flat Screen ...
Not to derail the thread or anything, but am I the only person who likes the good, old fashioned curved screen CRTs?
I dunno what it is about them, but I just don't like looking at the flat screen ones, hurts my head.

And the LCD ones don't look right either.

I have nothing to justify ths opinion, because it is just that, an opinion. I just wondered if I was the only person on the planet to not like them, as it seems that all factory spec PCs come with them now and everyone seems to be "upgrading" either one way or t'other.

As for the upgrade, I can't really comment as I'm just using the cheapest 19" I could find. Not had any major problems with it, so I've no reason to think about spending any more.

I find that when a pixel burns out in an LCD monitor, it's much more annoying than you'd think it'd be. The smallest CRT monitor you can buy now where I live is a 17 inch for $160 at the most. You should be able to get an absolutely enormous one for $300.

I am thinking about getting this monitor:

You are not the only one that likes the old fashion curved CRT monitors. I too like them and would prefer one over a LCD flat screen monitor.

The only problem with the monitor I linked to and others that I am looking at also is that I have heard of the "grid lines" going across the screen. I have seen them on LCD monitors and I do not like them. Thanks for everyones help so far but I am still looking for more information. Yes I have read reviews but I like to hear the "average persons" review.

if you are buying a CRT there are basically 2 things to look for: dotpitch & the refreshrate @ the resolution you want to use it at. (most other things are pretty secondary, like the type of mask used)

for TFTs it is a bit different since you need to look at contrast & responsetime (up & down). however both these things are measured differently by each company so you're basically fucked if you want to compare them... you'll need to read lots for reviews i guess.

Ok, thank you very much Suaside. I knew about refresh rates but I did not know what dot pitch was.

For anyone else that does not know what dot pitch is, here is a quick definition of it:

dot pitch
Last modified: Thursday, December 05, 2002

Also called phosphor pitch, a measurement that indicates the diagonal distance between like-colored phosphor dots on a display screen. Measured in millimeters, the dot pitch is one of the principal characteristics that determines the quality of display monitors. The lower the number, the crisper the image. The dot pitch of color monitors for personal computers ranges from about 0.15 mm to 0.30 mm.

I am guessing the monitor I linked to in one of my above posts is not that great when it comes to dot pitch.

Dot Pitch: 0.25-0.27mm aperture grille

If I am not understanding something someone please correct me.

Anymore advice anyone cares to share with me about monitors?

Edit: Ok, I guess 0.25-0.27mm dot pitch is not that bad but I am not going to be happy with horizontal lines going across my screen.

What causes the horizontal lines:

Ok, I think I am ready to go shopping again.

Heh, I've learnt to spot a 60Hz refresh rate from half a mile away. I regularily get pissed off when Windows XP resets the rate for no apparent reason other than to make my eyes bleed.
