First time out of the vault
"I once stabbed a man in Reno just to watch him die..."

So, there seems to be a few RPGs based on Fallout and Fallout 2 here, but all local and tabletop. So, I'm offering something new.

New Reno RPG is an IRC chat-based Freeform RPG based on the Fallout 2 world. New Reno is the home of the worst type of humanity that the postapocalyptic world has to offer. The Salvatores are gone and a mere shell of the Family they once were... now, the Mordinos, the Bishops, and the Wrights struggle for power in the city. The local gangs are good at bullying passersby, and while deadly, hold very little real power in the city. Law is the law of the Families... the law of Blood. The few vigilantes in the city either die out quickly or become enough of a thorn in the sides of the Families to make their lives very, very dangerous ones to lead.

In Reno, you have to watch your back. The vultures and the sharks of the city will just as soon stab their own mothers as spending a few measly hours with them, all for the price of another hit of Jet. If you don't watch your back, not even the Shi might be able to bring you back.

New Reno RPG has a perfect blend of freeform roleplay and a quality game mechanics system. It provides a lethal, realistic setting to develop character personalities and backgrounds and explore a character's potential with plenty of rules-mediated action and plot. The staff and player base are of decent stock as well, making New Reno one of the best chat-based RPGs on the internet and the only Fallout-based game on the internet of this type.

Since I knew this might perk some interest here, I thought I'd share the information about the game with you. Feel free to stop on by the site and the rooms to check us out, and don't hesitate to ask me or anyone there any questions you have.

For any and all interested, New Reno RPG is still an available IRC-based half-freeform, half system-based Fallout-based game.

And for an update to pique your interest...

The city of New Reno has dipped into a city-wide gang war, with open fighting in the streets between the larger Families and the small-time gangs that litter the corners and alleyways. For more than two months now, citizens have taken their lives into their hands to wander the city, knowing that at any time, a stray mortar might bombard that very street they're walking, or they might find themselves in the middle of a firefight between two rival gangs squabbling for a small bit of turf.

Most recently, a lone vigilante claiming the name of The Vindicator, which once belonged to a now-deceased NCR Military war veteran and savior of the city, laid waste to the Desperado bar and casino. A long-planned assault, five kilos of C4 placed at strategic points, and this man has done what so many others have tried for more than twenty years since the Chosen One faced off with Horrigan. The Mordinos are reeling, and their fate is in the balance.

Amidst the fighting, NCR has its own issues. President Tandi... is dying. And for the past few months, in order to prepare for the President's imminent death, four candidates have been campaigning for the next position of president of the New California Republic. A military man who wishes to bring NCR's golden age to all of the wasteland... a senator intent on pulling New Reno and the other autonomous cities under NCR's wing... another senator intent on retreating from the furthest wastes and letting the rest of the world outside the NCR go to hell in a handbasket... and a peaceable reverend with a wholistic approach intent on non-violence. One of these four will soon be elected the new president of NCR, and all with immense impacts on the home city of New Reno...

Come on by at New Reno RPG to get in on the action!

And more updates from the Wastes...

The gang wars ravaged the city. The Mordinos, the Wrights, and the Bishops were in open warfare on each other, and the small-time gangs were stocking up on their favorite weapons of mass chaos. You couldn't walk down the street without having to dodge mortar shells and molotov cocktails.

Not too much worse than normal life in Reno.

But now, now that's all changed. Lil Jesus Mordino... is dead. The Mordinos are under new management with vastly depleted resources. To the West, Commercial Row is still a free zone, patrolled by the heavily-armed shop owners. The Bishops hold more than a third of the city, including most of the middle and the north end of the city, and their Enforcers police the areas and keep common street scum from nesting there. The Wrights control Wright Town to the East, and their Minute Men keep peace there.

Peace... an unnatural thing for Reno. But it's been growing steadily, even if it's a far cry from NCR. Tourists have even started coming to Reno to "taste the edge of life".

But a foreboding odor blows on the wind. "Northern Rabies" is causing mass hysteria to the north, in Klamath, Modoc, Gecko... even the jail city of Dog City. Vault City has gone into lockdown in its "voluntary quarantine".

And those few from Reno, the heroes, antiheroes, mercenaries and villains, those who know the truth behind this "Northern Rabies", those who have seen that the Infected are far more than simple hysterical people... they can only imagine what horrors are in store for them.

So come on in to New Reno RPG! and check us out!

And even more updates...

The "Northern Rabies" turned out to be a sinister Enclave project left over from the war between NCR and the Enclave, nearly two years prior. Solanum, a virus that incubated within 24 hours and killed the infected, but kept the autonomic nervous system functioning to allow rigid movement and other basic functions. Much like the virus that infects ants and forces them to present themselves as targets to birds and, thus, spreading the virus over a larger distance, this virus controlled the host for its own procreation. The hosts became violent, mindless, and could transmit the virus via blood transfer; often, the virus forced the host to bite or scratch other humans to make the transfer. But the science behind the virus was no match for the labels of "undead" and "zombie", especially for those who saw the infected face to face.

Over the course of months, most of the northern cities fell. Vault City became trapped and besieged by hordes of the infected. San Fransisco and Arroyo were overrun by raider armies led by General Havoc. The raiders were dispersed, but Arroyo was then overrun by the infected without the city's defenses in place. Things were becoming dire as the 'undead' masses moved southwards, towards Redding, New Reno, and NCR.

NCR, San Fransisco, and all the other available powers joined temporarily to become the Allied Forces, in an effort to use sheer manpower to eliminate the threat. Attempt after attempt was met with mediocrity at best and disaster at worst.

And at the core of everything was Reno Squad. A rag-tag group of mercenaries, vigilantes, and war heros from the most dangerous little city on Earth. They were the wild-card, the ones that could get the job done when you didn't know what to expect. And through their trials and tribulations, they were able to infiltrate more hidden Enclave bases, get access to files on the Solanum virus, and find the solution: the Enclave had developed Blue Dawn, a counter-virus that would actively seek and eliminate strains of the Solanum virus. Through the depths of hell, Reno Squad fought and struggled their way to Blue Dawn and unleashed the blue mist that spread both the antivirus and hope.

Now, the western half of the continent celebrates. The plague threat has been eliminated, and the world can breathe easy again.

But that doesn't mean those from Reno can... because when one threat is eliminated, five more are waiting just around the corner. Tensions in the city are starting to climb again as an assassination attempt was made on the leader of the Bishop Family... the raider armies that overtook Arroyo and San Fransisco were dispersed, but the raiders still lurk in the wastelands... at least Reno gets to look forward to the next Ultimate Combat Tournament in the next few weeks. A tournament pitting the best fighters in the wastes against each other. Glory and riches await the winners, and shame or death awaits the losers.

Come play New Reno RPG! Set in 2264, twenty years after Fallout 2. You are a mercenary, a vigilante, a freedom fighter or a gang leader, and your playground is New Reno, the most dangerous little city this side of Thunderclap. You might face dangerous deathclaws, murderous gang members, or might get the chance to explore that new pre-war military bunker on behalf of the Brotherhood of Steel. It's never a dull day in Reno...

So stop on by and check us out! New Reno RPG. We're getting new additions to our staff, new and better rules additions, and whole new storylines to join in. Come on by!

So for an IRC-based RPG, people describe their characters' actions, speech, appearance, and thoughts through text, instead of words as one would at a table. The GM's do the same, describing the world setting, the NPC's, and the consequences of the Player Characters' actions. Any dice-rolling is handled by an in-game dicebot, according to the stats on the site. The game itself is a mix of Freeform Roleplaying and Dice-Based game mechanics.

I've just joined up today, and I have to say. The site sure is purdy! Easy to navigate, at around 2000 eastern(today) I was able to find people on and even get involved in a scene with other Player's Characters relatively quickly. The GM on hand was helpful and courteous and as this scene is continuing it is becoming clear that the place is not one of senseless twinkery with an abortion of a rules system.

The forum boards for the site, while sparse, attest to a continued effort to improve game mechanics and appeal to the creativity and logical thinking of players outside of role-play as well as their characters during role-play.

The problems thus far lie in 2 areas. Perks and Canon.

Those whom are Canon purists(::Coughvastmajorityofyoucough::) might not like what has occurred on the chat or even some of the direction taken. I can agree that canon is important- to a point. If you have an established setting, why Bethesda-ize it and turn it into something else? Players don't want a fallout RPG not based upon- dun dun dun duuun- The Fallout Universe. Yet, in defense, everything that has occurred thus far in their meta plot is something I can see have happening.(well, maybe not the solanum bit. But who in this day and age -doesn't- want to shoot a zombie with a Bozar?!)

Perks is the other issue. The perk system is odd too, in that they are known as edges, which can be purchased at creation for a variable point cost, and these points must be balanced by an equal number of points in 'flaws'. It seems that Mutants are a popular race, but don't expect vat-skin or big yellow sterile critters. Expect super hot fighter babes, and hunky(but dumb) prizefighters instead. Again, I personally don't have a problem with this, but I can see where others may.

Another note about the 'edges/flaws'- It seems that 'Combat Monster'(A flaw in which you frenzy and go berserk with only slight provocation) is disturbingly common. Yet witnessing some of these individuals in play has shown that 'taunts' part of being a trigger for this flaw to go off, does not seem to trigger it or even call for the int/luck/level roll to resist falling into a psychotic blood-lust. A free flaw? Maybe. The only gripe thus far(In all of a few hours) is that one flaw not seeming to be monitored or regulated by the GM's as well as perhaps it should.

Than again, I'm the new guy, so perhaps I just haven't seen them in full swing yet.

In closing I would like to say that I recommend this site for any fan of the Fallout Universe that wants to have more interaction than play-by-post. Or at least, faster interaction. I'm not a novelist but have managed to find myself interested and curious regarding the other Players-Characters. Well-written and interesting as they are.

I look forward to continuing my RPing here, and hope that more join us!
