New Vampire Bloodlines Preview

King of Creation

Vault Fossil
In case anyone is interested, Gamespy has posted a new preview of Troika's Action/RPG Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines. It looks really good (mainly cause they're using the HL2 engine, and overall, the Gamespy guys seem to like it. You can check it out here

I especially liked this line
Pumped up with a full tank of blood, the Tremere tore through the house like Star Jones through the buffet at Sizzlers

Yeah I read that and downloaded the movies on fileshack, and OMG. I'm going to get this. My favourite part was when the surfer blew up from the inside ("blood boil" spell). Can't wait.

The release date seems a little late though; november 2004??? (from the films, it looks mostly done).

PS: why did the reviewer say Troika created Fallout??

Troika, the RPG developers responsible for titles like the classic Fallout

There's no possible way to draw that conclusion from movies. Because:
A) YOu don't know how far they are with level creation.
B) You don't know how far they are with implementation of stuff NOT in the movies.
C) Bugs....

Because the founders of Troika were the "big three" behind Fallout.

Yes I know but Troika didn't, well, exist yet, did it?

Also, I'm just saying november seems a little über. Summer would be more like it, since they're going to delay the game anyway.

Well, you have to look at the big picture. They're using Valve's Source Technology, which is the Half Life 2 engine. They couldn't have started the game until the engine was completed. Then they had to go through the whole process of making a deal to use the engine. Then they had to modify the engine to make it more of a role playing game. Then they had to go through ALL the various stages of game development, which they're still in. The game isn't finished yet. Plus, they're bound by contract to not release the game until at least until Half Life 2 comes out.

Well, I'd say you trust the people who make the game on assessing what the right release date is. You wouldn't want a rushed product, would you? *scolds Bioware for releasing absolutely CRAP NWN*

Oh, and no, Troika did not exist yet, but if you look at their developer list, you see an astounding number of people who worked on FO1 and/or 2. This makes it fair comment to say that they created FO.

I though of something. Valve is recoding the engine completely now after the hacker attack. Wouldn't Troika have to get the new version? That would take ages, probably pushing back the game 6 months (maybe that's why it's set in november, by the way). If I remember correctly, the release date was set much earlier last year, when the game was announced.

I would think that it wouldn't matter too much for Troika. HL2 is being made with online play in mind so they have to make sure that the stolen code can't be exploited to take advantage of that. Troika's just doing a single player game, so they really wouldn't need the fixes that Valve is making.

I still don't understand how you can delay a game for a year (if that is the real reason, only Doug Lombardi knows) just to prevent people from cheating in multiplayer. Every other game has it, without any horrible problems. Or did I miss something.

Anyway, Vampire no multiplayer = :(

I think part of it is that Valve, like Id with Doom 3, bit off more than they could chew. They probably would've delayed the game anyway, the code theft just gave them a reasonable excuse for it. I could be wrong on this though.

The other thing that occurs to me is that since every (I think) multiplayer HL game has to go through their "Steam" client, maybe they're worried that someone could exploit that to hack users computers or send out a virus. Since I don't know anything about programming I don't know how likely this is, but it seems possible.
