No-CD manual modding

ColdWinter

First time out of the vault
In FO1 you could just copy some files to your HDD and change the directiory in fallout.cfg to make it work w/o the CD.

I tried to do that with FO2, but there's that thingy called cdlock or such, which I fail to find on the CD - is there any way to bypass this?

You know, it's way more convenient to start the game right away instead of inserting the CD.

Finesse, I think some versions (albeit not mine) have a line in the fallout2.cfg like this:

Code:
cdlock=D:\cdlock.dat

Coldwinter, try to remove this line or copy cdlock.dat to your drive and edit this line manually with Notepad.

Also, search the forum more...

PS. Żeś Polak? ;)

Copying the FO2 files to HD and running it does work, even with that cdlock line in fallout2.cfg. It just works, at least with the US version it does. I have done this countless times. The only files required to run the game are the 3 dat files, the fallout2.exe, and the music files. If you don't have a fallout2.cfg it will generate one, which you can then tweak.

Oh... well you can get the program alcohol 120% and it can copy the game from the cd and make it into an iso, or mds file (whatever you prefer). It makes a vitual cd drive and mounts the game on it so you dont need the cd (runs off hd instead)

Alcohol 120% is a good program for any game... it can copy basically any game and its cd protection and succefully burn it afterwords without a problem, I use it all the time and for an old game like f2 it wont have a problem copying it either... the only game I couldnt get it to work with is Dungeon keeper 2 (not that good of a game anyway...)

Go here when your about to copy a game to know what to set your copying datatype is...

Ive got 40gb's of game iso's that I run off my hd because its faster than cdrom, and more conveinent than to manually load each cd

Of course, all of them are legal backup copies.

And don't even try to say otherwise :)

I do the same thing, I never use my fallout CDs, they are legal ISOs. I don't hunt for disks, just use Daemon Tools to emulate a CD drive. The last HDD I bought was 80GB, lightening fast, and cheap. You can fit a lot of ISOs on 80GB.

Then again, I have both UK and US versions and I've never had to insert the CD except for copying files...

Experiment, CW.

There are versions of Fallout 2 where the copy protection does work, we figured that out a while back. I believe it was certain UK versions.
