VoodooExtreme is reporting that there won't be any co-op in S.T.A.L.K.E.R. afterall, here's what Oblivion Lost wrote:<blockquote>Senior PR Manager Oleg Yavorsky from GSC Game World responded to our community member ryan dunn, saying: "as for co-op, we haven't made any definite plans yet, so I'm not sure when it will be released, if at all. a patch-released co-op is wrong." I was told the same thing.</blockquote>Ack, I guess they needed to save time eh?

i'm not surprised.

if the game is all it is supposed to be it would be pretty complex (with an evoluating world, even when the char is not around, and such other features). just adding co-op or multi in a patch would be quite hard, as the engine was not made with this in mind...

I am. If they created an engine that offers an ever evolving/dynamic world, where you play against other stalkers, and the world responds to their actions as well, what would be the problem to subsitute one of the AI driven stalkers with a player ? Just wondering ..

RE:...

Probably the fact that all the dynamics and evolving need to be synchonized (over a connection with limited bandwidth)

Probably the player is treated differently from the other stalkers script-wise and there's a lot of player-related code.
I suppose they'd need to rewrite a lot of code to add multiplayer capabilities.

This might actually be a good thing if it means that they'll use the time originally intended for MP to improve and add stuff to the single-player campaign. At least, I'm not that big a fan of online gaming. I prefer having a good single-player experience.

euhm eric

you havent thought this through have you?

if they cant add MP, that is because the engine wasnt made for it. if the engine wasnt made for it, it wasnt planned. if it wasnt planned they didnt allocate time to it on the timetable.

ergo: there is no extra time to spend on the SP campaign...

I think his point is that if they otherwise had the same amount of time available for a game WITH multiplayer, the SP campaign would have been worse.

My point was this: They (the developers) were, as I could understand from reading the article, planning or at least considering implenting MP in the game. If not planned at all, at any part of the process, I couldn't understand why the PR manager would make such a statement.

As far as the engine goes, I believe that no official statements about it's limitations have been made yet (I could be wrong of course, and if that's the case please enlighten me :)).

It'd be a mistake not to include Co-op later. There are tons of people that would buy a game like this if they could act as a team with a friend. The only problem is the balancing issue introduced by multiple players. But then, Co-op is mostly a social excercise, so who cares?

Implementing MP at a later point is a good way to insure that the Single-Player component is as polished as possible.

Even if it'd take them months, a "Special Edition" with Co-op would boost sales.

i dont know why more developers don't add coop. It's a big selling point, at least for me... hell, i still play diablo 2 with some friends over tcp/ip
