No more fear of walking normal!

One thing that bothered me about Fallout 1 and 2 was the common phobia found in every single critter. Everybody could walk side to side and diagonally perfectly fine, but when they started to get the heebie-jeebies and start to shake if they tried to walk up or down the screen. Looked like a fast mosey-style walk/run from Texas if you ask me...

I say enough already! It's just weird to see them running doing some kind of jig AND wasting your AP all at the same time! Can't these guys be more like sub-atomic particles and choose the path of least resistance?

Its just the hex-system of movement. I would rather see some movement that is less reliant on physical hexes but something based on computer calculated distances. I think movement is the one thing that can be improved. Especially if there is any chance of 3d terrain.

Yea, that sounds good to me too.

Now lets talk about their fear of gravity. Are they afraid to jump every once in a while? It adds for some interesting dodging during fights. This is especially true if we have 3D terrain like you said.

Sure, I'd also like to see streamlined movement but the hexes were useful for determining the cost of movement (1 hex = 1 action point). If they implement a 3D terrain without the hexes, I'm wondering how they'll judge distance? Hope its not crappy like Pool of Radiance.

I know I've seen in some games that if you hover the cursor to the spot you want to go it will show a direct path of movement showing if you can reach it one turn. Carrying that concept further you could have the line subdivided to show the individual action points. Maybe it could tell the total amount of action points required to get to a certain location. And like the worldmap movement in JA2 you could draw segments of a line that define the movement if you choose not to go in a direct line for whatever reason.
