Noob question about restocking

(If this is in the wrong section or the answer is painfully obvious, please bear with me.)

How often do the merchants restock? I read on a wiki that the merchants restock their items every so often. I've been buying ammo from the merchant in the gunrunners area for a while, and I've noticed that even after several days (about 5 ) he hasn't restocked any ammo. Does it take longer than that? Am I just an idiot?
 
It's usually 2-4 days, but you need to leave the map and reenter to that it reloads (and triggers certain script elements).
