not picking up weapons

1) Are you able to pick up heavy items other than rifles?
NB: Try clicking the Left Mouse Button on an item to pick it up.
2) Are you at your Carry Weight limit?
NB: Open your inventory screen. If the two numbers at the bottom of the display, above your active slots are close, then the answer is 'yes'.
NB: Use the 'I' key to view inventory.
