NPCs are pretty god-like

First time out of the vault
Not only do they have infinite magical ammo but also healing factors? And basically no wear on armor and guns?

Is there anyway to make it so that NPCs have no magic ammo, have regular weapon/armor degradation and aren't so Wolverine-esque?

Do you mean the party members, specifically?
If so, I've been thinking about how to weaken them / bring them closer to the FO 1/2 NPC strength.

I'd like some feedback on these ideas:

Disable party member autohealing
   -1 dr bag to heal all (?) crippled limbs
   -if knocked unconcious (essential), wait ~10s after PC combat ends to get up

Make passive party members flee when attacked (to prevent enemies focusing on them and not the PC)

Weaken all NPC weapons [pure stat changes, weapon graphics would remain]
   -Boone's hunting rifle -> varmint
   -Veronica's power fist is spiked knuckles
   -Arcade's Plasmacaster is plasma pistol
   -ED-E's laser is probably ok
   -Rex's bite is probably ok (check)
   -Raul / Cass weapons ok?

Force HP levels through scripts, to balance power / health? Each party member would have unique a unique amount of HP at level 1, and gain a set amount of HP every X levels. This would override the HP calculated by the game, which currently gets waaay to high IMO.

This sounds good.

It'd be nice if NPC's could have options for healing. (ie, "auto-use food at below 75%" or "auto-use stims at below 25%") And have options for auto-using poison cures, or an option to make them use it.

I'd also like to make it easier to make NPCs equip weapons.

Another idea would be to allow the player to buy a limited number of upgrades for each NPC. (I mean, people do bitch about having too much money and nowhere to spend it right? And this way people could buy up stats for their fave characters)
 
What's wrong with playing Hardcore and make them unEssential? And kick it to Very Hard? I promise you any illusion you have about the invicibility of companions will be shattered in sch thing.

You set them to undying then you want to nerf them~
