NPCs wandering off-map

Sometimes NPCs that have random walking patterns wander off-map. Do they return or do they get lost forever? How do I get them back?
 
There's a finite amount of map area outside of the visible map: so they shouldn't be able to stay there forever if you let them do their walking thing. If they were chased out there by combat, you might have another problem.

Though, IIRC no major NPC (as in anyone with anything other than floating dialogue) is in a position to wander off the map.

If it's a real issue, you can use a resolution patch to make the entire traversable map available.
 
The worst thing to happen is to get an NPC killed in the exit grid. How many times have I killed a challenging opponent while he was standing in the exit grid, only to realize that I have no access to his PHAT LEWT... well, to tell the truth it only happened a couple of times. But it's still annoying.
 
If they don't actually disappear, then it's ok.

Actually, Tandi did wander off the map after I brought her back to Shady Sands.
