Nuka-Cola...wha?

First time out of the vault
So, I decided to go steal some food and stuff from the local cook. I get my hands on a shiny little warm bottle of Nuka-Cola. As I scarf it down, Nothing happens, But Suddenly I crave another one. And another. And another.
For some reason I just got addicted to nuka cola...and um It said that Im radiated...
Why is it that I got radiation from drinking Cola? And what exactly does radiation do.

"NUKA" cola.... duh. IIRC each bottle of Nuka Cola consumed increases your rad count a wee bit. addictions will affect stats many times also, unless you feed the habit... or just ride out the withdrawl (walking around on the world map for a couple days usually gets rid of an addiction)

radiation over time will make your character sick, lose some points in stats, regaulr hit point loss, etc.... when it get too high it can eventually just outright kill you, without treatment (RadAway will reduce your rad count. Rad-X - taken before entering a radiated area or coming into contact with radiation in general - will increase your Radiation resistance and can be taken multiple times for a culmulitive effect)

Don't sweat it, you have to accumulate a large radiation count to actually suffer something. You'll notice trouble coming when your character stops in the world map to vomit.

Also, congratulations on getting a rather obscure addiction. I however don't think Nuka-Cola serves to irradiate you, although I could be wrong. You probably got irradiated during your travels, in some area.

Also, it's pretty strange that you caught rads so early in the game... I usually go to through it all without a single packet of RadAway.

EDIT: You won't get RadAway until the Hub (biggest city), I think. Also, there's one other way to get rid of rads, but only late in the game :)

Um...*gulp* see..the thing is...my character DID stop in the world map because he was naseous. Anyways i know directiosn to the hub.

Did he "vomit mildly", was his "hair falling out" , or was he experiencing "intense agony"? :]

erm...he was just feeling naseous...but..im sure those are all symptoms you tell me of..gulp.
Well anyway I just finished raiding vault 15 and I'm off to Junktown and the Hub..If I'm lucky I'll find Rad-Away.

Nausea is but a sign of light irradiation, if it were serious, you'd be dead by now. If you don't catch more rads, you'll be OK.

Okay this is ticking me off.
So, I get out of vault 15, and go on to shady sands to rob some people and get some xp..

As I arrive I look down into the menu.
You gain 1 Reputation point
You gain 1 Reputation point
You gain 1 Reputation point

After closer inspection,
Hey...wait a second..that doesn't say reputation..IT SAYS RADIATION (oh noes!!)
What happened? all i did was travel on the main map!

Well, hello, what did you expect in a POST-NUCLEAR world? ;)

Some areas are just like that - irradiated. But don't worry, you have to get your radiation level way above 200 to actually hurt yourself. Trust me, you can easily complete the game without RadAway.

There's only one major location where you will need Rad-X; You can buy it in the Hub or loot it from Level two fo the vault beneath the Watershed :)

NO SPOILERS!

Oh, BTW, you can use a Geiger Counter to learn your rad level.

OOO thanks so much for all the help. But giger counter costs like 1600 and i have 300 :/
Oh well :)

....you kidding?
I ATE LIKE 10 FRUIT!!
And I just learned Iguana On A Stick is human meat.
Wonderful. Maybe I should just stick to not eating food...

This is one of the funniest gameplay support threads I have ever read.

Seriously, dude, don't worry about radiation. One of the most nonsensical things about Fallout is that radiation poses little danger (unless you barge headfirst into... a certain location... where rad levels are very high). If you *do* get seriously irradiated, there is a place you will find later on where you can get yourself thoroughly purged. There is really no reason to spend a single bottle cap on RadAway. RadX is a much better investment (as you will discover later).

Theres nothing funner than walking into the glow, bare naked 8)

Then, feeling your body liqufy and burn under the intense radiation.
Man I love this game :)

you could always lose the radiation points if you go to the glow and walk around 4 a bit. a giant rabbit walks out of the hole and cures you.
