NVidia 9800GTX 512DDR3

Maphusio

Sonny, I Watched the Vault Bein' Built!
I decided to splurge and replace my NVidia 7600GS due to poor frame rates in Age Of Conan (well I'm also replacing the processor with a dual core 3GHZ AMD and adding a new PC Power and cooling PSU).

Having only installed the video card (that is a foot long) I've seen the sheer leap in graphics processing alone and have been thoroughly amazed. I just can't fathom the continuous day and night leaps of technology we see each year especially in the graphics market. Where will this go, and how fast?

I've also been a strong ATi fan due to their slightly higher moral business standards but unfortunately an NVidia based mobo sort of forced the decision on me.

In the end, I'm fortunately happy with my decision given that the 9800 is not all its cracked up to be (from what I read). I think for me, it was a sheer numbers game, I took such a large leap in one direction, it was an obvious change... Reminds me of when I first bought my ATi 9800 way back in the day.

You should have waited a month since thats when the Ati HD 4870 will come out.

Everything indicates that this will be a new big step in graphiccards...

Our Germany-based colleagues from hardware-infos.com have managed to get their hands on a document that reveals specs for the upcoming ATI RV770XT and RV770PRO GPUs. According to them the lower priced one, HD 4850 (RV770PRO), should work at 625MHz for the core, 825MHz for Shaders and 1143MHz for 512MB of GDDR3 memory.

This one will have 480 stream processors, 32 TMUs (Texture Memory Units) and 16 ROPs. The mentioned 512MB of GDDR3 memory paired with 256-bit memory bus should give 73,2 GB/s of bandwidth. This one will have a TDP of 114W and the estimated price of US $249.

The RV770XT will work at 850MHz for the card, 1050MHz for Shaders and 1935MHz for either 512MB or 1GB of GDDR5 memory. We wrote about the use of GDDR5 memory on many occasions, and when paired with 256-bit memory bus, this combination should give 123.8 GB/s of bandwidth. It has a TDP of 157W and the estimated price of US $349.

Well christ... if those specs are anything resembling real (480 stream processors?!), and it really goes for $250, then I also should've waited a month to build my new computer. Too damn late now though, gonna be getting the parts Tuesday...

3ghz AMD dual core? If you're talking about the X2 6000+, which is what I'm on... Don't get it.

You're better off getting a Q6600 which recently got a 50% price cut if you don't mind getting a new mobo (you're on a socket AM2 right?)

AMD's processors are thoroughly unimpressive compared to intel's, I'd avoid them.

Thats the thing, I don't want to get a new mobo. Not yet anyway. If I did get a new mobo, I would have gone ATi for my graphics card. Thanks for the advise though!

One thing I do love, is that I can play Age of Conan with max advanced graphic settings and get 20-30 fps.

20-30 fps with maxed settings? Unless you're running like 1600x1280 with 16xAA/AF, that seems kinda low, or maybe AOC is badly in need of an optimization (wouldn't know, avoiding MMOs like the plague after two years of WoW ).

... You hit the nail right on the head when assessing my graphical settings

Luckily, my birthday is in September, and the Fall quarter is the 'hottest' time for video game/video card releases, so I'm all set.

I recall that the ATi 9800 Pro and the Geforce 7800GTX had their debue in the fall quarters, as well as the two fantastic games in 2004, Doom 3 and Half Life 2.

Now coming this fall, 2008:

Spore
Grand Theft Auto IV
Fallout 3
Left For Dead (Valve Multiplayer Zombie Game)

I think hes talking about it coming to the PC in october, although currently it is just a rumor.

-Ahhh 8-)

I recently built a computer with the AMD +6000 x2 and its actually a very nice processor. It does everything I need it to do.

It's not a bad little processor -and cheap too! For me, it was go with a 6000 or buy a new mobo and pay a load for an Intel processor while in the end I probably would not notice the difference... Bragging rights, just aren't cost effective...

7600->9800? That sure ain't no large leap, man. Two years ago, I jumped from a GeForce 2 to a 7900 GTO, that's what I'd call 'large leap'.
