Obama Orders Pay Freeze on Federal Workers

If I understand it correctly, a pay freeze means that wages are not adjusted for inflation. This means that if there is a 5 year pay freeze on my job and I make $1 a year, I make $1 a year for 5 years-- even if the value of a dollar decreases so much that it takes $100000 to buy a hamburger.

Without pay freeze, my wage would be adjusted to match inflation so that I get the same or similar "value" wage, not just the same amount of cash.

I probably misunderstand this, though... :P

It usually means that the only way to get increased pay (a raise) is to get a promotion (which is actually a new position). Normally different levels of workers have a pay range (upper and lower cap) which they can advance within, they usually disallow movement in that range and changing the range itself.

Okay, yes, Congressional pay is ridiculous... but US Government jobs in general are mostly much too high-paying, making significantly more than people doing similar jobs in the private sector -- not to mention the good benefits many of them receive.

This wouldn't really be a problem if we had a small, efficient government... but it's been slowly growing for a very long time, and they're very far from efficient; waste everywhere, IMO a sign of rampant corruption. Reminds me of a quote I read somewhere about a little revolution now and again being a good thing.
