First time out of the vault
I was so excited when I thought I had figured out a few miniscule things about modding fallout, considering that I usually tend to be pretty inept at stuff like that. Can't say it took long for that feeling to get crushed into a bloody pulp because... well... I wasn't able to get ANYWHERE.

It's so frustrating... I read the tutorials and thought I had the things that I needed, but when I tried to run any of the programs I got some kind of crazy error message and when I tried to open any files... literally nothing happened. To my knowledge. Not even one of those windows that asks what program to open it with.

Anyway... my main question is basically this. Does anyone else here have vista and if so do they get all these... problems that I'm getting? Because this isn't the only thing that's messed up on this operating system! I'm almost certain that that's what it is since when I tried similar things on a different (and significantly slower, shittier) computer my efforts were far more effective. That and the fact that sometimes my older games like the baldurs gate and fallout series occasionally flash seizure-inducing colors if i play them for too long... this didnt happen on my old comp.

... Jesus. I hope that's not too vague but there are so many issues I'm having with this that I scarcely know where to start. ):

@paralyze,

1. Vista does not install the older games properly. Older games usually have all of your saved games and other files that are modified as you play in the same "Program files" folder as the game .exe. Vista doesn't like other programs writing to the HD in these "protected" folders, so it puts them in a hidden folder in "My documents". This means the old game .exe can't find them when it tries to run the game.

The way to work around this is to NOT use the self installer for the game. Create a separate folder manually, then copy all the game data from the CD to that folder. Create a shortcut to the .exe and place it wherever you want. Vista then ignores it as an installed program and doesn't try to police it.

Edit - you'll need to do this same thing for any editing programs you want to use as well!!!

2. Try running the game in compatibility mode. This can be found under "Properties" of a selected application .exe. This is supposed to force Vista to treat it as a Windows98 or XP program, but it must be done manually.

3. If your computer has a multiple core processor, there is often a game system file that needs to be edited if the game was designed to run on a single core. Most will not run on a dual or quad core without forcing it to do so.

4. If your computer is using the 64-bit Vista, then you might be truly out of luck as there seems to be major compatibility problems with any 32-bit programs. :(
