OOC -

Anyone actually here, I'm afraid that we've hit rock bottom again, I've been here constantly and constantly willing to roleplay, the only thing is, is anyone else actually here and actually dedicated?

The problem with everything so far is that a thread gets a good reception, a dozen characters start playing but they drop out quickly. You soon see who the dedicated people are, but the story ends up devastated because of those who have dropped out.

After all, how well do you think a novel or fan fic would do if it lost half its characters every chapter?

Like the last time I came here trying to get something started again, I proposed that we would need a different style of roleplaying, but it didn't turn out as such. Thus, I think we should try out something different again.

What I think is that we should start up a single, long, roleplay thread for the entire board. Organizing it into chapters, each of these rather short chapters has a long lying back story, but each chapter is essentially independent.

The idea is to make characters dropping out and not wanting to play any more such a problem. And those players who wish to stay in the story can do so. This would also mean a character could drop out of the story in, say, chapter 4, and re-appear in a later chapter. Of course the story needs to be built to reflect this, my initial idea for it would be some sort of a long journey, that way people can be 'dropped off' when they drop out. The party will be constantly changing and story would change in 'blocks'. A block would consist of several chapters, say 3 - 5, the story in these chapters being fairly strongly linked. But with the changing of blocks old stories would be pushed into the past and new ones on the horizon. This would also mean that getting into the story would not require reading ever chapter before then.

Of course material can be later brought up and characters, places, stories re-used and twisted in new ways, but new characters would not need to know everything that’s already happened.

Again, the story would have to be written to reflect this, But I feel, if there is anyone here still willing to play, then this is the right way to go about it. I'm going to try and find some players to come and try it out, in addition to whoever, like me, might be lurking about these boards...just waiting for another start up thread. Well, here it is.

Assuming that everyone has given up the Harsh Reality thread, (I've posted asking for people to reply but no one seems to be there, I'm considering salvaging the story into a fan fic.)

I'm not sure exactly what the story will be yet, but if we can find players we can get going. I'm hoping that this idea will work and the story can survive even if one or two or more characters were to drop out.

Thanks for your time, please post if you have any ideas or suggestions or want to join this upcoming thread in Chapter 1.

Dear Fang-

I am kind of curious about this but haven't done it before. Do I just add to the story line after each new edition? What about characters being killed off? Would it be possible to fight other characters?

Sorry if these are basic questions, I'm not sure of the rules.

Cheers,

Welsh

Soo... do you mean to say, a Round Robin format? It would keep the story from flagging too soon, but then - it's not exactly roleplay anymore, is it?

Or is it a more exact form of roleplay? We're LITERALLY playing another person. If we could just first clearly set who the characters are, how they think, and what they would most likely do.. there shouldn't be too many problems.

Ok, well I'm back now.

I guess I should say something. This format was designed, based on what happened last time I tried to get a new thread up and running, loads of people flocked in and we ended up with over a dozen characters. And as soon as one of them became fully integrated into the story, developed a relationship with the other characters, that character decided to give up, and we were left with a hole in our story.

But, because it's been months to get a reply to this post, I don't think the same thing will happen this time, thus making the method I proposed rather unnecessary. However, if we do choose to begin a thread with just what few of us there are here, and then others flock in later, this method can easily be worked in to whatever we have done.

With only three or four people playing, it would be a lot easier to manage the story, and perhaps more successful, if anybody who answered this post is still around, I'd like to here what you have to say.

I would be interested to try this, but again, I'm pretty new.
I think the idea of letting characters in and out is useful, but if someone doesn't post fairly quickly, say within 5-7 days, then the player has to risk being dropped out, and will have to figure a way to get back in.

[font size=1" color="#FF0000]LAST EDITED ON Oct-22-02 AT 03:50PM (GMT)[p]Generally, I've noticed that when the thread is smaller with only a few characters, people turn up as much as two or three times a day, but when you have larger threads (and a lot to read before you can post) people generally take a lot longer making their replies.

When I start threads, they tend to be rather small, three or fours characters involved. But I always leave a window open for other characters to make their way in later. And this generally happens a lot, more and more characters join in, and suddenly instead of your little casual thread, you have a massive one on your hands.

The way I would see such a system working is longer running characters being the 'main' characters and newer additions becoming 'side' characters.

Well anyways, I'm gonna start a new thread and we'll see where it goes from there.

I've been meaning to have a look through that. When I have a half hour or so spare I'll give it a read. But I will be majorly free of everything by the beginning of the next week so my new thread will be up by then.
