Paranoid game developers

With all the latest game announcements, I'm also noticing (this is me though, your opinion doesn't have the same) that game developers aren't really eager to release info OR any demos. Most games that come out today usually don't have demos associated with them. Also, paranoia has settled in since companies don't want to release anything about their game until it's too late. This even applies to lesser games, but I've noticed it in HL2 and Doom 3, mostly. Maybe it's all the demo stealing and code theft that kinda scares developers away. I dunno, but I just feel game companies used to be a lot more open about their projects. Thoughts?

The only thing that occurs to me is that they don't want any negativity about the actual game until they've gotten as many pre-orders and as much hype as possible. Up until they release a demo, anything negative said about actual gameplay is strictly imaginary - once the demo is out though people have something tangible to criticise, and if the reaction is largely negative then they can kiss a lot of sales goodbye.

They don't want to release demos to the population if the games are crap. Would you buy a game if you played the demo and didn't like it? There's still a lot of demos for games out there, but you have to have an "in" with somebody.

Most demos nowadays are released AFTER the game, as opposed to the good ol' days when games like Carmageddon and Quake released demos before the full version came out, kinda whetting your appetite with a sorta-buggy not yet finished game.

Exactly. I loved that. I wanted to be able to play the game before I bought it, not just trust blindly in reviewers, like I have to do now.

I used to buy the magazine E2 which cam every month with a demo cd in it. It was great you could try about 10 games, you could make up your mind about the game too, most of the time the graphics weren't fully finished, but the gameplay was there. I personnaly don't give a crapper about graphics and cut scenes and animations, i like gameplay, that's why i can still go back to playing wasteland, Ultima III, Questron I and II and still have fun.

I was talking to a guy at a local game shop last night and we were talking about XIII and he said that he pre-ordered the game, got the demo and tried it. But he didn't like it and cancelled the order.

I blame this on consoles. PC makers can't take the risks they used to.
