I bought this laptop and it only has a C: Partition(and also another partition for windows recovery and such). the thing is that i want to have 2 partitions. So i try to run Fdisk and shrink the C: partition but it wont allow me to make it smaller than 246 GB. So i defragmented the C: partition and again i try but it still wont allow me to make it smaller than 246 GB.
So what should i do? The laptop didn't came with a recovery disk and i don't want to fuck up the recovery partition.
should i use Gparted or Partition Magic? or do you guys have a better solution.

Click Start, right-click Computer, select Manage. In the window that appears go to Disk Management section. Right click C: volume, select option Shrink Volume, enter required values. Once shrinking is done, create a new volume in the empty space and assign it a letter.

fdisk and Windows Disk Manager are not the same mate :) Are you encountering the same problem with DM?

In that case you have some unmovable files way far down the disk (strange on a fresh install). There are two ways around this.

Either track these files and delete them (Turn off System Restore, Turn off Virtual Memory, delete System Volume Information directories) and try again, or you can go full destructoid, delete all partitions except for the OEM one (the first partition with backup installation), recreate them with fdisk and then restore the system to one of the partitions you've created.

Edit:
Here's a p. good thread:
http://superuser.com/questions/88131/how-to-shrink-windows-7-boot-partition-with-unmovable-files

I like the idea of using an Ubuntu Live CD to do this with GParted but I never actually used it for resizing Windows volumes. I always resized my partitions from Windows before installing Linux as dual boot (my standard config).

I suggest using Partition Magic. If that tool can't resize your partition, nothing can.

@Dexter Morgan:
sorry mate, you are right. i actually meant the DM. :D

I made a back from the OS and other recovery files on DVD's now so i think i am ready to do some experiments. :mrgreen:

Thanks for the thread mate.

EDIT: Ok, right now i read on our university's website that they sell Windows 7 x64 Professional and it only costs 10 euros for students. No need for partition magic now i guess. :mrgreen:
