Patches & Mods beginner's guide (FO2)

First time out of the vault
Howdy. New user here, only found out recently about the incredible amount of work done by the community on these games (and another of my favourites, Planescape:Torment). I reinstalled FO2 recently with the resolution patch and Sfall, but only played a little before I realised there were more mods I'd like to try. I'm gonna install & begin again and I want to use the RP, but I'm feeling a little bewildered about the amount of patches and mods and whether or not they are compatible with each other. If I could get advice on any patches/mods that don't play nicely together, recommended combinations and if there's any preferred method / order of installation, that would be great. I am searching the forums but have not yet found a straightforward noob guide.

  • - I've got the original Fallout 2 CD, I'm planning to do a manual install onto a portable drive to play on various PCs. I'll follow the manual install guide and I'm aware of the need to change the cfg file's absolute paths into relative paths. Then, here are the tweaks I'd like to use, as shown in the patches/mods sticky:

    - Childrens patch
    - Resolution patch
    - Killap's Unofficial patch 1.02.26 Is this instead of the official 1.02 patch, or as well as? Should I use this one with the RP?

I see there are also fan patches up to 1.05, do I want/need one of those?

    - Restoration Project RP instructions say install onto a "clean" ver1.02; does that include Killap's version? Does that mean the 1.05 patches aren't compatible? Should I install Children's & res pacth after the RP, or doesn't it matter?
    - Timeslip Fallout 2 engine tweaks - is this the same thing as Sfall?

The sticky's link to the MIB88 Megamod page is broken; I've had a look at that and the wiki and have not determined yet if it's compatible with the RP, I'm guessing I'll just use the latter and not worry about the Megamod.

Please give me a heads-up if any of the above contains redundancies or conflicts or the like, any special issues I should be aware of. Apologies if there's already a clear guide which I've missed; if not, I'll edit useful info into this top post for others to follow.

killap's Restoration project includes sfall (same as Timeslip's engine tweaks), the hi-res patch and his unofficial patch. If you go with the installer version the children patch is an optional extra.
The unofficial patch in turn includes the official 1.02d patch plus some previous fan made patches (so you don't want to use the 1.05 patch or the official one).
All you need to install is the RP.
Also, the Restoration Project and the Megamod are not compatible.

And something to think about: there's a new RP version coming out in a week or two, so do you wait for that?

Ah, thank you very much, I will definitely wait. Lol, and that's literally everything I had my eye on included in the RP. Much simpler than I thought :D

There was one other thing I forgot to ask - I've read about world-map travel speed affecting (completely killing off?) random encounters, and I've read of a fix for that. Or maybe a couple of different ways to fix it, I forget now. Anyway, is that dealt with in the RP too, or is a separate patch/mod required?
