When I try to reinstall windows xp on another computer, it claims that pci.sys is missing or corrupted. It is a formatted drive, so what could be the problem?

If I'm not mistaken(which I probably am) whatever computer you have isn't compatible with that version of windows.

I remember having the same issue when I tried to install XP Pro onto my sister's laptop that had XP home.

Check your sata or IDE cables. Take them off, ensure there are no debris in the connectors, re-seat them and see if your rockin' and rollin'

If that does not work you might try the following steps:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q307545

Also, if you have not all ready, you could try formatting and reinstalling XP. If the same happens you might try the above option.

Ultimately, you might have to accept the possibility that your HD is not feeling so hot.

If your HD is a IBM Deskstar (AKA DeathStar), take a picture of it, tell me how long its worked and send it to me so I can have giggle time!

Well im really not sure but i have some obscure memory from aeons ago that i had similar problem when installing ME. Problem was IIRC that for some odd reason my bios settings for cpu speed were somehow wrong and i had to do something about them.

Uh... i hope thats somehow helpfull...

I have bypassed the pci.sys and is able to install all the windows files to the HDD, but when it restarts the installation does not continue. All I get is a black screen with the cursor blinking.

Seriously, unless the disk is damaged or you are installing incorrectly, that can not happen.

Format the drive (no you don't need to do a long format) and ensure you install a fresh copy on a fresh NTFS partition.

If you run into the same issue and your CD is not scratched I'd highly suggest trying another HD or going out and purchasing a new one.

Storage devices are cheap now days and if you wanted to go crazy (like myself) you could get a velociraptor!
