persistent blackout problems on fallout 1

First time out of the vault
OK, I got the Fallout Trilogy collection and have been playing it for about a week. After making it to the Hub in Fallout 1 with no problems (and having a Deathclaw massacre my Level 5 magnum wielding character about 247 times), suddenly I'm having persistent blackout problems.

The screen goes completely black and only moving the mouse cursor around can un-black it. I've only had the problem very rarely in the past and usually entering and exiting the Pip-Boy would solve it, but all of a sudden the problem became so persistent that the game was literally unplayable.

I was recommended to come to this site to download the High Resolution Patch for Fallout 1. While it has worked a little bit, the problem has not been alleviated. I am at a complete loss on how to actually fix this problem. Preferably without losing my saved game file. Is there a specific screen or color resolution I should be using?

I should also point out that I am using Windows 7.

There's a bunch of things about blackouts in XP in the troubleshooting thread, maybe something applies in 7 as well.
