I don't know if this is old news, but there are 2 mods out that let you play BG using BG2's engine - all the improvements, classes, etc.
The first one is about 700K, and you can find it here.
The second one is about 700MB, and the link to the FTP is here.
I think the only difference is that the bigger one allows you to play BG->ToSC->BG2->ToB straight through, and you can delete your BG1 install after installing the mod. I haven't used them yet, but if I get any more CTD's in ToEE I might give them a try until the patch comes out.
