playstation 3 advice

Ok, I know nothing about consoles. But my brother-in-law, a Brazilian, wants my wife and I to bring him a Playstation 3 game from the US to Brazil.

But I have a few questions- do I go with the Playstation 3 80 GB or the Playstation 3 60 GB. From what i have learned it seems the 60GB has better backward compatibility.

Also- are playstation 3's region specific? Can we play Brazilian Playstation 3 games on an American system? Or is the region thing just about DVDs?

Any advice?

Better backwards compatibility? I'm pretty sure the backwards compatibility is the same for all models. When first released, my PS3 had image rendering issues with PS2 games, but it was fixed in like a week with a system update. I would recommend you have broadband internet to tweak and support your PS3 just like a PC, or youll be running back and forth with flash cards all day. Since your from brother-in-law is from Brazil, his region code for the PS3 are different from those of the US, so you'll have to either hook up a brazillian PS3 to the internet and install Linux on it, and do some stuff that I don't know if it's against the rules but ill check to see if i can say on this forum, or buy a US PS3. As for the differences with the 80 and 60GB, there is not any besides extra HD space. Although, I thought 80GB was only available in South Korea. Ill check and update.

*Edit* If Brazil is a PAL country, the only difference is that the PAL versions PS2 compatibility is software run instead of hardware. 60 and 80 available. And regions codes seem to work fine with games instead of DVDs. IDK why, but i have a busload of import japanese PS2 games that work on my system.

The only PS3's that did not use software emulation for backwards compatibility were those from lauch and those were all 60 GB.
I don't know if they are the same 60 GB versions you'd find in a store now, but it really doesn't mean much anyway.
Almost all PS1+2 games can run and most run just fine, though you'll need to download the latest firmware to get most working.
Some games lag a little, like in Soul Reaver (the only one I've tested) you'd get short framerate drops, but it doesn't happen very often.
I think there was a list somewhere about which titles work with no issues, few issues or many issues (Soul Reaver belonging to the latter categori), so a trip to google might be worth it :P

The cheaper 40 GB version has no BC at all, for no other reason than Sony wants people to buy more PS3 games  so that might be a poor choice.

If there's no rush, I'd wait for a new version that bundles the new controllers with rumble in with the PS3, because otherwise you'd have to buy those seperately, and some future games might not work without them (Metal Gear Solid 4, I hear).
However, this might be risky since they removed the BC from the 40 GB and have made no mention of including again in future versions.

It's amazing what you learn reading Kotaku isn't it? :P

yup...its interesting to know that there wont be any 60 GB versions in Europe anymore !!! only 40 GB versions .

@Welsh :
my advice to you : don't buy a PS3,buy a nice graphic card for your brother in law
as for the ps3 ,you can play games with the PS3 everywhere , but you can't watch Blu rays with it.And also ,if the PS3 gets damaged or something,it wont have any Guarantees in a PAL region country.

Brazil's a bit awkward when it comes to broadcast standards I seem to remember.
I think they use a weird standard that is a mix of PAL and NTSC ones.
Here's a wikipedia link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PAL-M_(television)
Now what that means for your brother-in-law may very well depend on what sort of telly he's got, as most modern sets are multi-standard.
If he's got an HD ready TV, I don't think it's going to matter.

Yep 40gb is the only one that doesn't support PS2 games.

The 60 was discontinued maybe 2 months ago, an there are rumours that we are not going to get the 80gb for at least 6months possibly never - but that's of little concern to most people i spoke to as most people I have talked to already consider the xbox 360 the winner in this round.

Thanks for the advice. From what I have heard. the 60GB uses hardware for backward compatibility while the 80GB uses software. The 60GB is supposedly 100% compatible while hte 80GB is about 85% and requires downloads of software.

I have to admit I am a bit worried about the funky Brazilian PAL/NTSC.

I expect that when he plugs it in the damn thing will explode.

(success- my wife got it through customs without a problem!).
