Polish Wasteland - Questions and Answers

First time out of the vault
Ok, lets get this thing rollin'

This is a thread dedicated for all questions connected with PW. Our site was and is Polish-only, and that means that you have been lacking a good source of information about our game. This will probably change in a few weeks, because an English version of the site is going to launch about then.

And now, maybe some basic info about the game.

PW is a 3D isometric retrofuture cRPG, its action set after the Third World War. The storyline is similar to Fallout's - the history changed its course somewhere around the '50 or the '60 of the 20th century. The USSR didn't fall in the '80s, as in our reality, and the whole eastern block survived till the War. The mid 21st century was an age of a world-wide economic crisis. It's not known for sure, but problably the USSR had tried to "bring peace and order" to rioting Western Germany and Austria somewhere in the sixties. It had resulted in a long period of conventional fighting, that has finally ended in a nuclear war.

The action takes place among the ruins of the PRL (People's Republic of Poland). The architecture, cars, miscellaneous objects (like posters, signs, everyday products and such) are based on real things from the PRL, mostly from the 1945-65 period. I'd desribe the game style as "hardcore-PRL" or "hardcore-socialist". Unfortunately, some aspects of the world could not be understandable by people that didn't live under the Communist regime. What differentiates PW from Fallout is the fact that in the eastern block the fright of the nuclear war wasn't as big as in the West, thanks to other everyday problems to worry about (lack of basic products, secret police arresting people and such) and the Communist propaganda. That means more motives connected with how people managed to live under the regime, and not with the nucelar paranoia.

But If we, Poles, managed to like (or love) the American climate of Fallout, I think that it can also work in the opposite direction :)

Another important thing is the language. Unfortunately, the first version of the game will be Polish. What about an English version, you'll ask? Well, we hope that there will be an English version, although we cannot give any details this time.

The game was supposed to be turn-based, but in the last few weeks we decided that it will be real-time with an active pause. This will make the game more realistic. We also removed some flaws from the mechanics of combat (eg. missing your enemy with an automatic rifle standing 2 hexes away). The RPG system is based on Fallout's - there are no classes, professions, and the stats and skills are quite simmilar to those used in the SPECIAL system. The biggest change is that we eliminated levels - now every skill is upgraded if it's being used often enough. Oh, and I forgot - we still have perks (although they will probably appear in the game under another name).
Silencer warned me, that the game could be regarded as "arcade-RPG" due to the real-time combat and character developement system.
About combat - well, If one regards combat in tactical games as arcade, he will regard combat in PW as arcade as well. The PW combat system is probably more realistic that the one in F:T, not to mention Arcanum.
About the RPG system - no, there won't be any players running for hours just to build up there athlete skill or something like that (like in Morrowind). Couse we don't have an athlete skill. ;) Of course, If a player wants to upgrade his melee combat skill by fighting everyone he meets in random encounters, or helping townfolks by repairing every busted object in town, that's OK with me. Players did it in Fo, so why shouldn't they do it in PW? :)

And now, the thing I like the most :) The weapons used in the game (about 80 models of firearms) are either fictional or were in use somewhere around the fifties and sixties. Yes, that means that the AK-47 will appear in the game. And those guns that are fictional are often based on existing ones (usualy prototypes or rare models).

We will probably be looking for a publisher, and that means, that the game will not be freeware. We will try to make the price of the game suitable for all of our Polish clients, that is about 30 PLN (10 USD), which is a typical price for "cheap game" series here in Poland. But that also means, that the distribution of the game outside of Poland will be probably independent from us and thus we cannot give any details about it.

But, be warned, everything I mentioned in the paragraph above is just speculations for the time being.

If you have any comments/questions, post them here. I will answer them as soon as possible.

Cheers,
Gerard
