A while back I had just DirectX 5. Then I got DirectX 8 for some reason. Now I'm unable to do certain things and play certain games.
Whenever I do these things the screen goes black and the monitor lights blinks like the computer isn't on even though it is. Nothing responds and the only way to get out of it is to push the power button.

It happens when I try to run the Fallout2 installer or when I try to play Zdoom or something at certain resolutions. The reason I blame DirectX is because the only thing that has changed was I put in more ram, another hard drive, and installed DirectX. I thought it might have been DirectX but just to make sure I took out the drive, ram and return how it was before except for the DirectX. But it still fuckedup, nothing changed so I put back my shit in.

I tried using that DirectX uninstaller thing and tried installing DirectX 5 again but it still fucks up. I would just back up my shit and format just to make sure, but I don't have my Win98SE CD anymore. I'M FUCKED.

If anyone can help me with this, please post it here and email me what you have to offer. jrevelle@onemain.com

Thanks.

RE: Possibly DirectX 8 problem that is stopping me from inst

I think this is a monitor refresh rate problem(Don't worry it won't be broken physically or anything). Try going to display properties by right clicking on desktop and choosing properties. Then go to settings tab (i Think)then click on the advanced options. Then try monitor(or similarly named). Under refresh rate option try changing to defult if not already selected. This sorted out this problem when it happened to me. If it doesn't work change it back to whatever it was. If you have any problems and you can't see your desktop just restart in safe mode (F8) when windows is booting and put it back to normal. If you still have problems you can tell DX8 to set your monitor refresh rate (some where in advanced section of dx config thing, and try setting it to a refresh rate you know your monitor supports), however this is best avoided. If this doesn't work try DX8a.Sorry I didn't see your post earlier. Hope this helps.
