The lever-action crossbow is plausible and you could get more than three shots. It depends on how large you make the magazine for it. It wouldn't be a tube magazine so length isn't' a problem. It would most likely fire shorter bolts tipped with poison or some other chemical agent. It would be good for hunting small and fast game or against unarmored opponents.
I've heard of the deformation of archers but it wasn't caused by the tension of holding a bow string or anything like that. If I recall correctly, it was caused by the muscles becoming very developed on one side of the body and them starting to warp the bones slowly over because the muscles weren't stretched properly. The same thing happens to soccer players who don't stretch their legs enough. They develop a kind of bow-legged look because of the muscles. Modern archers know about stretching and proper exercises though so this wouldn't occur as much. - Colt
