Predefined characters

I have one sugestion about predefined characters.
What if by choosing predefined character, you will choose not only your basic stats, but also place on the map where you start and your primary quest (and maybe you can then meet other predefined characters in the wastelands as NPCs, help them with their quests and take them with you). Or maybe you can choose evil path right from a start and begin as a hitman which quest is to find & kill good character. It will even more increase great replayabity of Fallout.

Damn, a good idea. And a NEW idea. I haven't seen THAT for a while.....
But what if you create a custom character ?

Not to criticize (ok, well, maybe it is), but isn't that *alot* of extra programming? They would have to program different quests for each individual. Also, why is the hitman after the *other* main character? Has he/she already completed some quests that conflict with someone elses plans? Are these quests you would normally play as the "hero"? I can't imagine someone having a hit on them for no reason.

Expand on your ideas, put in a little more detail, explain to me how'd it work (if you would.)...

i like it the custom part would be easy there would be three character parts to choose from. Each character part would have a different starting point and a slightly different goal.
The Hitman i don't think could work but a Thief/Mercenary character could be in the game but not against good just on the good side for bad reasons.

Custom characters would not be a problem. You may create custom character, but you also choose who you are (ranger from NCR, trader from Hub...) and this will determinate your primary quest and also way how to realize final one. I also dont think it would need too much of programing because most of the quest would be common for all characters.
Who you are and starting place will only determinate their order, which of them you may take and your starting karma in some places (if you are a ghoul, you will be hated in some towns, but in Gecko you will have higher starting karma). By taking some NPC (another predefined character), you will also take bunch of new quests available for him/her.
One notice about being a "hitman". Hitman was only example, I just think about possibility to play "opposing force". Your quest would not be to kill some good character, but to help "evil side" to reach their goals. You may turn around and help to destroy it (I also think about this possibility for good characters), but if not you may find, that some good character is too dangerous for your side and must be stopped (by guns or only by words).
You may also have two or more sides (like NCR, Vault City and New Reno in FO2) which are at some kind of war, and you can help one of them or unite them. Position of your character will then determinate, which of them is your "home side", and which of them will be suspicious for you - and this will then determinite your quests.

First off, I don't like the idea of starting off as a Ghoul or any other 'non-human race'. It really wouldn't feel like Fallout anymore (at least for me). I can't imagine a 'non-human' going from town to town; and not, eventually, having a mob attacking them. Example:
Ghoul walks into town A.
People treat the Ghoul badly because he is different:
Something ends up stolen.
People think, "We didn't have things stolen until the Ghoul came around."
Mob forms.
Ghoul is slaughtered and made an example.
2 weeks later, stolen item is found in a drawer. (Oops.)

"Your quest would not be to kill some good character, but to help "evil side" to reach their goals. You may turn around and help to destroy it (I also think about this possibility for good characters), but if not you may find, that some good character is too dangerous for your side and must be stopped (by guns or only by words)."

Doesn't this force your character into a alignment specific role though? It wouldn't seem right for your main quest to revolve around your starting alignment.

Play as a mutant or ghoul maybe wasn't good idea, but I only wanted to explain how will your gameplay depend on different character.
But why not allow to play "evil side" right from a start? I know that it may require more programing, but you get a chance to look at story with totally different view. And if you don't like it, you may try to return on a good side again.
I also don't think that predefined characters with their own history would make game too linear - you choose your starting point and not way how to get through game. Of course by choosing some character, you will choose some "navigation points", but who's saying that you must follow them? And wasn't then FO1 and FO2 slightly linear too, but with only one story to choose from? I only think that in FO3 you may to customize your gameplay not only by choosing your stats, but also by choosing begining of your story (only begining, and not a whole one).

So is the end goal for all starting places the same? (We all have to destroy the master, whether we start off searching for the water chip...or stealing Tandi from Shady Sands (an alternate begining).)

It may heavilly depend on story (stories) of FO3 and how much of time (and money) will BIS (I hope) and Interplay give up to it. There may be more final goals or just one, but by choosing your starting point and assignment you can at least choose begining and maybe middle of story if not a whole one. And maybe, if story will be i.e. something like "Three groups fight one against another and you have to help your to win" (very simplified) then you can have three (or more) different characters, starting places, assignments and even stories, with many common but also many character dependent quests.

Fallout 3: Opposing Force .......

hehe
i like the idea of having a sort of job tho
i reckon when u joined either the slavers or the rangers you should have had more than just 3 jobs.
anyone notice that? someone at black isle sure had a hard on for the number 3
i use to copy the klamath town file, join the slavers, do the 3 quests, leave, put the klamath file back, redo the 3 quests etc.

The number of the counting shall be ...3!!! No more no less! First you pull the pin ....(Monty Python anyone??? LOL)

In fact in any BIS game a lot of the characters give you just three quests...Ever played Planescape???? A lot of ppl give you 3 quests...

I would call it the Holy Hand Grenade Syndrome as far as whats occuring at BIS with the obsession with 3 ...

Sorry for my non sensical rant hehe

Predefined = Alignment!!!

I assume you mean the Den,

as for the main subject. I did always like the idea of choosing one of a couple of starting positions of wich each would bring a different main quest.
Different settings, storylines and quest will keep the game fun a lot longer (I've been playing Fo and Fo2 for 2 years now and I'm still not bored however, but besides that). Now I realise that would be exactly what BIS wouldn't want, unless it would be the last of the series, since if you keep playing the same game, they won't make any more money on other games.

However I don't even care to consider choosing race and Alignment!!! like in BG, an evil alignment gives you a lower popularity level (in fallout terms; karma) wich would cause merchant to suddenly ask higher prices. And if you choose a good alignment you won't be able to steal. So basically almost everyone I know choose a 'treu neutral' alignment. Fallout is fun because you play who you want and do what you want, like you would in real life. (about that commend, no H-bombs please, I'm still to young to become a ghoull)

(notice how I still haven't found a good way to end a message) -William-

RE: Predefined = Alignment!!!

But you have alignment in FO2 already - you were "simple tribesman" and people treat you like tribesman unless you become more popular. But what I want is possibility to play someone totally different. OK, I can set my intelligence and charisma to 10, pick science, doctor and speech skill, but I'm still tribesman and must get through Temple of trials, Klamath... It would be great, if I can start i.e. as one of scientists in San Francisco or as guard in NCR... I know that something like this can't be implemented in story similar to FO1 or FO2 and would need much of programming, but hell I am player and not Interplay/BIS programmer ;-).
