Problem with launching FO2 after installing RP

Gordulan

First time out of the vault
Normally, I have no problems with running the vanilla FO2, or any other modifications for it. But now i've installed the RP 2.0 and the latest patch, and well, yeah, it just doesn't launch the game any longer. This is the error message:

Could Not Load DirectX (title)

This program requires Windows 95 with DirectX 3.0a or later, or Windows NT version 4.0 with service pack 3 or greater.

I run windows XP and have the latest drivers installed on my comp, any idea how to fix this/bypass it?

Note: Deleting RP2.0 makes the game playable again...

Did you try installing the latest version of directx from here? I'm fairly certain all will be well when you install it.

yep, tested it again, just to make sure, still same error message... T_T was really looking forward to using the mod...

Did you reboot after installing the latest version of directx? Also, what patch did you install after the RP? You mean the 2.0.2e patch? Remember, all you need is a humongous install of the game, the RP installer and the latest RP update.

I'm not sure what else might be wrong, but 2.1 is due out anytime now, so you might as well wait and see if that helps.

I had exactly the same problem with RP2.1. (Win2k 5.00.2195 Service Pack 4 with DirectX 9.0c installed, Fallout 2 v1.0, US, Humongous installation.) Note that after I uninstalled RP2.1, and then downloaded and installed RP2.0, the latter worked fine (except for saving game error, though).

UPD: I'm unable to install the most recent (June 2010) DirectX update from here. It seems to me that this version has no Windows 2000 compatibility. So I'm afraid that RP2.1 is consequently not compatible with Win2k either, in case if this June DirectX release is crucial for running RP2.1.

In what way are you unable to install it? Microsoft says that version of directx is compatible all the way back to Win 98. Also, the RP does not require the *latest* version of directx, but some version released in the past year.

Well, I'm a bit confused right now. Redist download page says differently: Supported Operating Systems: Windows 7; Windows Server 2003; Windows Server 2008; Windows Vista; Windows XP Service Pack 3. But WebInstaller download page mentions Win2k indeed.

I get 'not a valid Win32 application' error when trying to install June 2010 redist with DXSETUP.EXE;
dxwebsetup.exe crashes with the following message:

---------------------------
DirectX 9.0 Web setup
---------------------------
Error creating process C:\DOCUME~1\Akater\LOCALS~1\Temp\IXP000.TMP\dxwsetup.exe. Reason: INNT\system32\advpack.dll
---------------------------
OK
---------------------------

('Akater' is my Admin login, and it is used as everyday login as well.)

However, since the latest version is not necessary, I don't feel OK complaining about all this here. :)

I was posting this in the main RP thread but this could be more appropriate since I detect some others using historical relics to play this game.

Thanks Killap for the new version. However can't get it to work, using an old computer, I think the game would like a newer OS. Cliking fallout2.exe gives me two errors:

"FALLOUT2.EXE - Entry Point Not Found

The procedure entry point EncodePointer could not be located in the dynamic link library KERNEL32.dll."

"Could not load DirectX

This program requires Windows 95 with DirectX 3.0a or later or Windows NT version 4.0 with Service Pack 3 or higher."

I remember having somewhat similar issues with 2.0 at first, but then I downloaded "something", probably some directx stuff and it worked fine, with the higher resolutions and all (never did finish 2.0 waiting for 2.1 though).

I downloaded d3dx9_42.dll since it was mentioned a few pages back and put it in my F:\games\fallout2 folder but it doesn't make a difference. DirectX web installer won't work with the ancient OS. The newest DirectX JUN2010 100mb redistributable installer doesn't work either, I downloaded and installed the AUG2009 one since that seems to include the d3dx9_42.dll file so I thought that would be new enough, no change.

Windows 2000 Professional (5.0, Build 2195) Service Pack 4
DirectX 9.0c (4.09.0000.0904)

With the RP I installed:

-character appearance (long hair dude?)
-enhanced world map
-party armor with special armors
-YAAM
-quick goris derobe
-remove random party lvling

Please don't tell me I have to put together a new computer to play this old game.

EDIT: Looked around, the sfall FAQ says this: "A crash on startup mentioning a missing entry point in kernel32.dll

sfall requires windows xp or above. Don't try using it on windows 9x. "

Looks like win2000 isn't supported.

Hmm, I will have to play around with this. I have an archive of every single version of sfall ever released. I also have every copy of sfall that was released for Win 9x before support was dropped. My installer considers Win 2000 and above to take the latest version of sfall, while if it detects Win 95, 98, ME as your OS, it will give you the last version of sfall that was released for Win 9x. I did not realize that Win 2k support was dropped in sfall versions and I will have to adjust for this. Expect an updated installer, etc soon.

EDIT: Alright, looks like 2.6c (2.6.3) of sfall is the last version that works for Win 2k. I'll makes these changes to the installer and manual install of the game. As I said in the RP thread, expect the final 2.1 release (aka 2.1.1) to occur next Friday (7/23). This update will include an updated installer and manual package that includes a version of sfall that works for Win 2k.
