problems with sound in fallout 2

First time out of the vault
i installed fallout 2 on my dell pc with 3 ghz processor with a creative soundblaster live! 5.1 sound card, but when i play it the sound effects cut out after a little while (less than a minute). i tried running it in the different compatibility modes but the same thing happens. music plays, fmv sequences work fine, only the sound effects are missing. could someone PLEASE help me, i want to play fallout 2 again so bad.

p.s.-- i have it patched, it doesn't help.
