Puuk on the announcement timing

I found an interesting post by Damien "Puuk" Foletto from the Black Isle Studios Van Buren Team on the Mistress Lair forum (hey Missy!):

It's not a confidence issue for Van Buren at this point. The simple fact is that it is VERY early in the development cycle to warrant an official announcement. We want to make an announcement once we have something to show. Right now all we have are Area Overview documents, tech and story docs, some engine conversion and interface stuff, and a handful of concept art. Hardly enough to show to our fans and press, at the moment. It's also a timing thing. We don't want to announce so soon into development and start building hype that by the time the game does ship, everyone's sick of hearing about it and lost interest (Jefferson was a whole different ball of wax that had to do with legal stuff. Van Buren doesn't suffer from that). Once Van Buren is officially announced, however, it will get its own forum, I'm sure of it. But until then...

Well they will eventually announce it, and we`ll be here to cover the big announcement.

That's very prudent of BIS.

Remember Valve's mistake in announcing Team Fortress 2 and Counter-Strike: Condition Zero too early? CS:CZ has been delayed along with it's Steam counterpart. And there hasn't been any word on Team Fortress 2.

And then remember that bastard John Romero's Daikatana. Apparently, Romero was supposed to make me his bitch (or so the advertisement for Daikatana claimed). Hyping the fanbase when you've got nothing to show ain't a good idea, Johnny. And when Daikatana came out, you just had to laugh at the incredibly politically incorrect plot, strained dialogue, and horrendous bugs. *Ahem* now who's who's bitch, Johnny? And you can take that (along with your bankruptcy claim) to the bank, Mr. Romero.

Yes, and Team Fortress and Counter Strike also have a much larger potential (sales wise), probably.
So, they are doing the right thing.

And there still is a chance the game will be cancled like Jefferson.

Ah, but Jefferson's cancellation can be largely attributed to Interplay cocking up the D&D license. There should be no such problem with Van Buren.

I agree though, it could still be cancelled for BGDA XIII.

That thread

I see the 'sensible' non fanboys are having fun over there bitching about how terrible the Fallout fans these days are. I wonder if they realise their hypocrasy?
Oh and I'd like to see the thread they talk abotu where the 'fallout fanboys' were requesting rape in FO3 (presumably in a humourous context, if dealt with seriously it might be OK I suppose)

Well there are an incredibly high ammount of silly posts over there, many of the good ones aren`t having the attention they deserve because of it. The way they are trying to tigh up that siliness to fallout fans in general is wrong, those threads would be squashed in no time if they were placed on fallout fan sites, as it already happened in the past.

The important thing is to say "Welcome Mr. Teatime!" 8)

Are there even any "fanboys" posting over there? Or are they just lumping posters they disagree with as "fanboys"?

That's the thing - I don't really see any posts from anyone but the same 10 people who post in every single thread. I have half the posters there on ignore and still every thread over there is almost impossible to get through. They basically troll everything that's posted, troll their own trolls, and flame pretty much everyone except the Interplay employees.
Meanwhile, while deriding "Fallout Fanboys", their own suggestions and comments are so fanboyish iit boggles the mind. I've basically come to the conclusion that its a looney bin over there, and avoid it whenever possible.

Briosafreak, I'd like to thank you for grabbing the news from that place day after day - you're a braver man than I!

Thanks

I am in the middle of moving. It's an old house, so got to paint and budget a new roof. Threw away 6, 40 pound, 386 PC's that I had used as uprights for shelving, like cinder blocks. Difference in trash collection between the localities means big chucky stuff like 13 and 14 inch monitors should go now. Enough backround.

Would it help or hinder to say I appreciate your efforts in culling the herd,
and bringing "the best and the brightest" here?

The hypocracy of those I'play fantasy trolls has been a theme of mine too. Been jumped and flamed for flying NMA and DAC colors, via my opinions of Interplay Quality Assurance, and FO:BOS 's dubious DNA.

One had a "trendy" sig that ozzed ""I am a RPG DEV"". Please save the
pedegree for someone who cares. Used same scalple and sledge technique as any vet of Vault 13. Trust it kept them from beating their spouse, or their dog, or both, for another night. I say, "Spot, leave while you still got 4 legs to limp on, don't be a martyr to love. Spot it's time to start loving your self, bite the SOB on the ASS and run for the door; a safe house is arranged, guarenteed amnesty for your evidence....."
