Questing AFTER the Enclave

Santonin

First time out of the vault
Until RPv2.1.1, I had never made it as far as going to the Enclave due to the never-ending problems with bugs (kudos to Killap the RP Wizard, Per the Guru of Documentation, the author of the Hi-Res addition to the RP, and any relevant others for saving Fallout2 from the trash can). RPv2.1.1 FOR THE WIN! I am most pleased to finally witness the "end" of the game (not the 13yr limit).

My problem now is this: After I returned from the Enclave, I went back to Vault City to continue doing quests that I had temporarily bypassed in favor of "saving Arroyo" as soon as I could based on info available in-game. My first stop in VC was Stark, for whom I had the quest to scout a route to NCR but had not yet reported back to him. However, when I tried to complete the task, I could not. All I got was an emote.

My question (yes or no) is this: After returning from the Enclave, is it normal that some (or many, or all) quests in various places are no longer doable (locked out) ? I have paused my gameplay to learn the answer to this question.

To Per: Sorry man. Your guide qualifies as a legacy, but I saw no answer to my question in your work (or in any other guide that I could find), even though I think my question only relates to basic gameplay information. Do you by any chance plan to make your guide concurrent with the RP at some point? I've tried rewriting it myself for own use, but the task is too great and I simply am not willing to do all the work and testing that you have obviously done. Besides, I like your sense of humor.

Closing Comment: If quest lockouts after the Enclave are part of normal gameplay, then the game-logic is oh so flawed. Using Per's walkthrough, and having the Chosen One's sole purpose of finding a GECK and saving Arroyo as the (new player's) highest priority, the shortest logical path to saving Arroyo based upon information obtainable in-game looks like Arroyo > Klamath > The Den > Vault City > Gecko > Vault City (vault access) > The Den (get car to save travel time) > Redding > New Reno > NCR > Vault 15 > Vault 13 > Arroyo (with GECK) > Navarro > San Francisco > The Enclave (with optional detours to SAD, Military Base, and other destinations). If the highest priority for "the Chosen One" is to find the GECK and save Arroyo, then it is illogical to have to avoid completing that task until all other "lesser" quests are completed in order to get the most out of the game. For this reason, I have been compelled to risk the NMA Hostile Admin Flamer mob in order to ask my question.

Thanks in advance for any illuminating replies.

HOSTILE ADMIN FLAME BLOCKER: I have posted a GAMEPLAY question in the GAMEPLAY forum. I have read the STICKY, and I have SEARCHED and read through many pages of search results. I have DONE MY BEST to comply with "the rules". If any Admin deems that my question is somehow posted to the wrong forum, or if the answer to my question is in fact already somewhere on this site, DO NOT FLAME ME!! A simple mature explanation on how to do it properly (don't be a jerk and say "read the sticky" - I read it already), or a simple "Your answer is here: <link>" response is all I need.

Don't think this is necessary, the admins are generally quite laid-back and your post fits well enough into this forum section.

Though I'm not sure how to answer your questions (never noticed anything like you say myself), if you don't get a clear answer here you could ask in Fallout General Modding because you're using the RP and it may be related to that rather than Fallout 2 itself.

I don't think an admin flamed someone already for posting in the wrong section.

Yes, lots of quests can't be done anymore after that, because NPCs have changed floating text, etc. instead.

About the guide with the RP: As far as I know, a version that compiles the RP changes does exist already. I don't have a link to that side and I don't know how complete it is, but at least it exists.

I think it's normal but it's been a long time, most of the quests lead to the status of the towns/characters in the ending slides. So for that reason alone it makes sense that you can't do them after completing the main quest line. As for game logic, if you are role playing, then the logical path is the one that fits your character. For instance if your character can take the Vault City exam and pass then the path is Arroyo - Klamath - The Den - Vault City - Vault 15 - NCR - Vault 13 - Arroyo - Navarro - San Francisco - Oil Rig. Everything else is for characters who can't/won't pass the test, or failed to rescue Vic, or couldn't enter Vault City in the first place.

Wow, so this does happen? I guess I always finished most of the quests before I even go to the Enclave so I avoid this completely then.

Including the forum rules that say "This forum is for tech support and game help for the basic game with official patches ONLY" several times? Nice work on preemptively insulting the mods, though.

It's a good point that if quests close off because of the new floats, the guide should mention it. I'll try to remember to put it on the heap of stuff for the next update in uhhhhh a few years' time.

Plot-wise, I think it's assumed that the people of Arroyo and Vault 13 settle down using the G.E.C.K. from Vault 13, so that your previous quest becomes largely irrelevant even if unfinished.

Requiem: I believe you've hit the answer right on the head. When I used the term "basic gameplay", the area endings would be the specific "basics" that had not ocurred to me yet. The quest lockouts do make total sense when you look at it from that viewpoint. Thank you.

Lexx: Thanks. I have both guides bookmarked. I put my question to Per on the remote off-chance that the size of his printed html document (well over 200 pages) could be reduced significantly by taking the redundant bug information out (the RP fixes the bugs...right?) and then re-releasing the guide for the RP users. (What was that Per?....Oh. Hehe. Don't worry man - I'm not holding my breath.)

Reconite: Agreed - the "Hostile Admin Flame Blocker" thing was a defensive move and probably wasn't really necessary. My reason for putting it there was only that I saw a few "hostile" (imo) reply posts by one or two admins threatening to ban the original posters for what appeared (to me) to be legitimate posting errors. My "flame blocker" was just my "nuclear bomb" way of killing that problem before it could get to me. Sorry about that Mellow Admins. No offense intended.

Lastly, thank you for the replies to my question. If it wasn't for this site and Per's guide, I'd never have been able to get a handle on this game. It is easily the most complex of it's kind that I have ever seen. Pity that Bethesda stuck it's nose into Fallout 3 or I'd have been interested in that as well, but after their bug-ridden releases of Morrowind and Oblivion, I don't buy any more Bethesda games.
