Questions about GOG.com's FO2 and Mods

First time out of the vault
I just purchased and installed Fallout 2 from GOG.com. I've been searching, but I haven't found anything concrete to suggest that I should or shouldn't patch it.

Am I correct in assuming that since it's made to be compatible with Vista, that it is indeed patched properly?

Other questions consist of: Are there any mods that wouldn't be compatible with this version of it? And are there any trainers or utilities that wouldn't work on its game files?

I haven't played it yet. I wanted to know if there was anything I could add to it before I started.

BTW, I played FO2 years ago on Win98. My mom bought the disc on a whim and only for a dollar! It's stuck with me ever since. I mean, who gets to be a porn-star in RPGs?! :D

GOG version is compatibile with XP, Vista, Win7.
The only probem I notice is with strange colors appearing in videos & game but it doesn't bother that much (and I think can be fixed with sfall/resolution mod)

As far as I know it is patched with official patches but you might to install killapp's unofficial patch or killap's mod: Restoration Project to enhance gameplay.
All mods should be normally compatibile (you might need to remove patch000.dat file for some mods)

Thanks for the info! I was wondering when I'd be able to play my game. LOL I guess I can look into some things now. :)

AFAIK GOG sell childless european versions of the game. Check that. If it's true then you may have to install UK-specific versions of the mods and patches, If you plan to do so of course.

Right now, I can't even play my game! I've been fighting with it for the past two weeks trying every solution to fixing my color problems! >:[

Well, I know two ways to solve this problem reported as effective by some people.
First one is to try different video-mode settings in ddraw.ini. See string starting with Mode= under [Graphics] subsection. Comments right before the string are self-explanatory.
If the first way fails there is second. Download all suitable for your video-card driver versions and try one after another. If you are lucky enough some of those will fix the issue.
Actually there is third way to try. But I doubt that it works with NT6. Open properties of the shortcut you are running game with and switch on "Run in 256 colors" flag on the Compatibility page.

I'm going to try nuking the explorer. Then if that doesn't work, I'll make sure my video card is updated.

I already installed directx 9 and all its updates. To no avail. I will try these solutions now.

Does having the Restoration Mod installed have an effect on this? I cannot use the hi-res mod (I unpatch it), it'll just show a blank screen. That's okay, since I really prefer the old skool way anyway.

I've tried changing settings and the like, but nothing has worked. :(

I'm now trying to get it to run with the D3D program. However, it keeps crashing when FO2 starts up. ;,;

you do not have to use D3D Windower anymore as there is mod that does same job (but not emulation like D3D).
High resolution mod comes in RP 2.0+ , try that

I had a "could not read from memory error" right after the intro with the GOG version of F2/restoration project.
Turns out I had to check and uncheck compatibility mode.. perhaps this can be of help to others.

I know the hi-res comes with the restoration mod. I can't use it though. Nothing appears when the hi-res is active. So I usually disable it.

I also usually never have any compatibility settings checked. I've noticed they tend to disturb the mods I have installed.

Also, I've realized that even vanilla, I can't get the game to run properly without the rainbow colors problem. D:

Both games are fully patched. Fallout 1 is the UK version and needs the child patch, but Fallout 2 is the US version with the kids (I'm playing it right now). I'm using sfall and it's working great and I have the latest ATI drivers (running Windows XP).
