Radio station mod

First time out of the vault
Just been trying out the tricks to put your own music on the radio in fallout 3, and an idea struck me:

How hard would it be to make our own radio station, with a proper host?

Specificly, one with a more "modern" selection of music, (i was honestly thinking of a rock station) and a DJ similer to three dog in terms of awareness of events.

Currently, i have no real modding experance with either the fallout series or the oblivion engine. However my only asset is an english/scottish accent (scottish people think i'm english, english think i'm scottish)

You could always put the BBC world service as a station on a broadcast loop...

I was wondering if it was possible to make an entirely new radio station, yet. I think a Tom Waits channel would work rather well with Fallout, despite being far more "modern".

If not, I'll just replace Agatha's. Any useful link to people not familiar with Oblivion/FO3 modding with instructions how to go about it?

I don't see why adding new radio stations shouldn't be possible. There's various radio towers that you can activate that have a repeating SOS signal on various different channels for your radio. You could always change those SOS signal channels to new radio channels - maybe even turn it into a personal little quest to find your radio stations. Or just outright make it so that the radio towers are already active, and expand their range.

Part of the challenge would be getting a voice actor to be the radio show host, again, like three dog.

It would also proberly be possible to put up a radio shack somewhere out in the wastes with the host as an NPC (killable ofc). It would also be a good accomplishment to find the triggers for the "news" that three dog does.

I think another good idea would to perhaps make the radio station.. well.. 'themed'. GNR always seemed to be rather oriented around upbeat oldies music, usually with the intention of making light of the old civilization or hinting at 'yeah, it's bad out here, but it could be worse'.

It wouldn't make much sense if the host were to play a random bunch of songs with no correlation between each other, like playing Rammstein one moment, and then all of a sudden you're hearing DMX's "Where Da Hood At?" or Celine Dion singing the theme from Titanic for that matter. Doesn't seem to string together all that well, does it?

Although I'll admit that going from blasting ghouls' heads off to headbanging heavy metal, only for it to swap over to "EVERY NIIIGHT IN MY DREEAAAMS! I SEEE YOOOUUU! I FEEEEL YOOOUUU!" in the middle of it all would be nothing short of hilarious.

Any progress on this front. Personally I just want Three Dog to play new songs.

That would mean me selecting tracks to place in the NGR music folder which can add to or replace his current songs.

I don't mind listening to Three Dog, but I do want to expand his play list.

A new radio station would be fine too. This way I can listen to music and when I want 'news' I flip to GNR, but if its possible to take all the Three Dog audio files and use them I would.

If we were to expand on GNR's playlist, I'd want to include songs that still fit in with the station's theme.. Stuff by Dean Martin, Sinatra.. just to name two big names.

I feel you and concur. I also would add that if the game is suppose to have a retro 50's feel why the music from the 40's. All those songs feel like they are from the late 40's or at best early 50's or they are 50's songs but of music which is a throw back to an earlier era in music. I was thinking why not alter the song choice but keep the oldies feel by adding Rock songs from the 1950's: such as Rock around the Clock, or Shake, Rattle, Roll, and other catchy tunes (or by Chuck Berry and other artists of that era). Its retro and feels like it, and is straight from the 50's.

Yet, if the choice is made to go with expanding the list of artists already on the GNR station or very simliar ones fine. Right now its like listening to pop music and they play the same hit song by Brittney Spears 4 times in the same hour. That is equally mind dumbing.

A new station, call it a pre-war name from the DC area, or whatever, is a station you can either pick up without a quest. Seems the easiest. Sure with further modding it can be made into a quest.

The game isn't just 50s style. It's early atomic age, cold war, PRE-rock n' roll.

You mean adults in the game? There are kids in the game, but in this instance it would be the adults who would listen to the rock.

I take it that the general consensus is rock was not part of the Fallout world's decorum. Duly noted.

It could have been. Personally, had I made the game design I'd have kept something of a feel. In Fallout 3 though, when you go to school and it has a gang of kids that feel like they are from the Outsiders it just made me feel this is an echo of 50's society, and I could fully see a bit of Rock n Roll there, by that though means 'old classic rock' not the Classic Rock we hear in the mid-to-late 60's and beyond. Plus it would only be artists who are American, pre-British invasion. That stuff is classically American and fully in the Fallout feel to me at least.

No, the adults would be the ones shouting at their kids who would be listening to rock n' roll. Let's use the Tunnel Snakes as a good example here, they're your typical delinquent teen/young adults that would listen to rock n' roll music while combing their hair back and wearing leather jackets. This includes kids younger than that too.

The adults, such as Lucas Simms, Colin Moriarty, parents, etc would be the ones telling the younger generation to turn it off/turn it down. The exception would be the more free-spirited adults, like Billy Creel.

I agree. Perhaps a Rebel Radio station can be created, with a guy like Wolf Man Jack, or some other DJ personality, or simply a kid who says "GNR is for squares" and blasts the "best Rock'n Rolla in the Capital Wasteland"

Place it near a signal that beams a Radio signal SoS, and perhaps even place a kid in there as the DJ. You can't kill the music cuz kids can't die. Here's a neat idea make the kid a ghoul (or not) perhaps a kid who lived 200+ years might be neat.

I think it's a great idea to add new songs and/or a new radio station. But you should keep in mind that music is copyrighted so if it really comes off the ground you might be in for a treat (as the "author" of the mod). Probably not a real issue but it's something to keep in mind :)

That is why the best mod is simply a folder called Music in your Fallout 3 file which you can fill with the songs you want. Copyright or not, and thus listen in your experience of the game.

To me that is the best music mod. I wish GNR could play songs and would take songs from the Music folder in the Data folder of Fallout 3 and then play them as it cycles through music, and if that means disabling the current play list ok, if both can be used ok.

OR

Create a new station but again, have a Music folder. If you like certain music and want it in your gameplay, use it, if not don't. I personally would use Ambient type music in mine, but I'm sure others will have different music. The whole issue of copyright is thus beside the point since your not distributing music, your merely having a mod that allows others to insert the music they may own the right to play and want to have in their game.

I would thoroughly enjoy a mod featuring a custom radio channel. I think a true addition would be nice instead of just altering the GNR station.

I have some ideas, but I'm pretty sure a CS would be required for them.

1. One of the pointless radio towers could be revamped for the new station.

2. Like some of said on here a 50's style station would be the best.

3. Have a new named NPC in one of the radio stations attempting to repair damage to the equipment, but not succeeding. Your repair expertise would help facilitate the station in it's new broadcast.

4. Depending if the scripting would allow it would be cool to hear different types of music at different times of day.

I haven't even begun attempting a mod for this game. The last time I got into modding was for the Morrowind Visual Pack and I can say that it seemed to take precedence over actually playing the game.

It could be possible to have an interface option to let the player choose the music that is played?

Dont know how much hacking of the game system this would take though...

That, or you could put the BBC world service on...

Raiders radio? would explain the music and or nutty behaviour from the host...
