Random Encounters

Duckman

Sonny, I Watched the Vault Bein' Built!
Well, I'm having a problem with the level of random encounters in Tactics... This isn't the first time I've realised, but just started playing it again and the number of time I've had to exit from fighting thousands of cockroaches is ridiculous.

I've looked through the last few pages on posts, to see if this has come up fairly recently, and tried the search, but there is nothing directly helping me here... And I've given a quick look in the files for download section, but nothing that I thought would work I saw in there...

Thanks in advanced,
Duckman

P.S Sorry if this is a fairly recent/well known about problem with an easy solution, but any help will be taken.

Buy more bug spray. ;)

Turn the difficulty level down, invest some skill points in outdoorsman or read some scout books. Travel straight to your objectives and don't wander the world map.

Heh, more bug spray it is!!

Well I fooled around with the BOSCHE editor, and amped up my outdoorsman to full, I still get lots (and I mean LOTS) of encounters, but at least I get to choose whether I go to them...

As for the difficulty, it's on it's lowest setting, and all I do is go straight to mission objectives, and never wander far afield.

I think when I was travelling between Bunker Beta to Bunker Gamma, I had well over 20 encounters that I could choose to go to or not (after fiddling with the ooutdoorsman), and it is just plain annoying!

Thanks for your help though!

Mmm, ok then. I'm just playing straight out of the box, no mod or anything like that to even change any original settings...

Then maybe patch the game?
It could help...
Or at least fix some annoying bugs you might come across. (no pun intended)

I've played the game many times (yeah... I know ! ) and on some plays I did have lots of random encounters, to the point where it grew really annoying, but even with big Outdoorsman stats, patch or no patch, it never stopped. The only thing I could do was use the fastest vehicles available so as to make trips shorter and be slightly less pissed (even though I still would have killed for a "decline encounter" hotkey).

But it doesn't happen on every game, so I guess it's all about "bad karma" when creating your character. Who said there was no role playing in Tactics ?

Then again, you might want to cut the crap, and call it a bug. :whatever:

This may be a weird thought, but could this be related to very low Luck?

No, it's not that. I had a thought something similar to this, so using the BOSCHE again, amped my Luck to 10 (for experimental purposes) but I still have the option of declining thousands of stupid/annoying random encounters, ie robots, mutants yadda yadda yadda....

So right now I'm dealing with the problem by leaving my outdoorsman skill super high, and just declining all random encounters. Still annoying to travel a small distance and every few seconds an encounter coming up.

As for the patch, if I install the latest, will that affect my savegame, as I'm nearing the end of it?

I don't remember hearing about any conflicts with savegames. Back up your savegame and then try it and see, worse case you have to uninstall and reinstall the game.

Oh it would of helped if you'd mentioned from the start that you haven't patched. Then I would of pointed you to this;

Patch ReadMe said:
- Fixed random encounters chance so that frame rate does not alter the chance of
encounters, as a result it should be more consistent (and lower) on all
machines.

Oh shit, I'm sorry. I didn't think that would have made any particular difference, but again I apologise!

Thanks for the help.

Where's that animated gif of someone bashing their head against a keyboard when you need it? :?

:wall: or something to the same effect...

Yeah, I'll try the patch as soon as I get the chance.

Cheers!

I can tell you its not about the patch.. I still have so much encounters, its just better to fight one time, and then skip. Because after the first skipped encounter, every meter i get a knew one, like in a second of moving.. Its so annoying. But i think its made to prevent those things like: fallout1-2 done in less than 15minutes:) In old f-f2 you could ran and get one encounter per whole map..

I very much doubt that, mainly since FOT is a linear game unlike the rpgs, you can whizz around the world map as much as you like but you won't find any areas unless you do each mission and unlock them as you go.

Most likely it's a conflict with newer machines, where in Fallout 2 a new machine would make movement on the worldmap so fast you don't get many if any encounters in FOT it probably speeds up the encounter generation rate not movement speed.

At least, I see I'm not the only one here experiencing that... I cant (I mean, CANT) travel across a SINGLE box of the map without getting 2 or 3 random encounters. Sooooooo annoying....

And my game is patched >.<

That might do the trick... hoping it wont totally slow down the rest of the game !

I wonder why those random encounters arent based on the clock, rather than the cpu speed ? I guess it was simpler to program

Play it in one of the TB modes and it won't really matter.

But I just tried with cpu grabber and in mission didn't seem any slower, but I've not really exprerienced too many encounters so I can't say if it help with that or not.

I to have the problem of getting 20 encouters between the bunkers. I have Farsight who has a Outdoorsman skill of 90% so I can avoid most of the encouters. Damn annoying in the start of the game however. My game is fully patched as well, right from the beginning.
