Random fallout 2 lockups, wtf

Thin Red Paste

First time out of the vault
Hey all,
Lately, I've been having a problem with fallout 2 randomly hanging my comp. not just the game, the whole comp. cant even ctrl-alt-del. i havent tried fallout 1 to see if it does the same thing; someone else is borrowing my fo1 disc. anyway, the game will work perfectly for not more than five minutes, then it locks up. if I've got winamp playing, the music repeats the same half-second like it does any other time the comp locks completely.

I've run scandisk, virus scanner, spybot, none found anything at all. I cant recall making any changes to my system lately, except removing a dead hard drive, but that was just today. I've had the problem for a few weeks.

my system: athlon xp 2400+, gainward geforce fx5200, 256mb ddr ram, and a generic sound card i've been using for years (imo, the least important component and i havent had money to upgrade it)

It ran on that before, but now it suddenly doesnt. any ideas?

currently win98.

I've been thinking I should put on 2k, but that means i have to nuke my drive and change the file system, doesnt it? I really dont want to do that.

no, you really dont need to change the file format, but you have to nuke the hard drive....dont know anything about the crashing....by the way, IF you decide to switch to 2k, make a seperate partition for windows, that way, you dont need to nuke anything other than the partition with windows on....

This is very weird. Try disabling every start-up item and see if it does anything (use msconfig.exe).

HUZZAH!

Either aptyp's suggestion or my reinstallation of some of my hardware drivers fixed the problem, it works fine now :D

You don't need to nuke any HD to install 2000 (or XP) over 98. In fact when you do you can boot both (if you wish so).

Just a general caution, there is some stuff floating around out there that I know is not happy on dual-boot systems. I can't remember what it is, but it's a good general caution for everyone here since XP has become the defacto OS shipping on Windows boxes and Fallout 1 will not run happily under it...
