Hmm, I was just sitting here reading over the posts and an idea popped in my little easily amused head, so I'll post it without even thinking about how bad I'm going to be bashed. :)

What if Item placement was random? In that I mean for items that you would find normally (both on shelves and people) would be determined by some sort of dice roll as you enter the town/fight? I hate playing every new game and knowing exactly what is on everyone, and exactly what is going to be on a certain shelf or locker, etc. It'd be cool if it would vary, But not go to extremes... For example a place where you'd normally find a flower wouldn't randomly be a Bazooka in one game, but maybe something of around the same value or a slight chance of something a little better, like a stimpack. So where you could find a flower it could randomly be a bottle of beer, Peice of fruit, healing powder, or stimpack. Maybe the chance to find the slightly better items could be determined by luck? Another use for that stat is always welcome.

And now for random battles... If you've read some of my other posts on this message board you know I HATE fighting the same old enemies with the same old gear over and over again, So this would cause for some serious variation.. When you first enter the screen of "A group of Robbers" it would vary from another "Group of Robbers" because the gear would be random, but once again not completely out of proportion. Like.. A robber could have the chance of having your average black pistol (the one you start fo1 with, forgot the name) or a revolver, or some other semi-low level weapon, each only slightly better then the next. But once you moved on in the game the variations would be bigger (example: Sanfran mercenaries).. Like would have either a Gauss Pistol or Plasma Pistol or some other good weapon, etc etc etc. The weapon variations would still stick to the group of enemies you were fighting, But some change is good. I'm just saying that a group of Power Armor clad Bounty Hunters wouldn't have the chance of being only equipped with spears...And Robbers you fought early in the game wouldn't have the chance of having Gauss weapons.
Oh...! And the chance of them either having a healing powder, stimpack, or two stimpacks would vary.
All of these factors could be determined by luck also, If a char had a luck of 3 as opposed to 7 he'd have a slightly "better" chance of getting just slightly better weapons drawn on him.

Thanks for reading my rambling! Reply to it if you can, I want to hear what people think about "Randomness"... I think it's an awesome idea, but I could be wrong or not be thinking of bad things that could go along with it, So tear it appart if you feel the need, I will not be offended.

Respond!

Randomness would indeed bring some freshness to the game. Me likey!

They should only appear after you've left the area and only after a day or two. It would make it so breaking into homes would be worth the time. The people owning the home should also get smart and buy a safe or dog or guard the place.

I'm kinda confused by your post. Did you think I meant the items should change -every- time you entered a town? That's not what I meant, I just meant the first time you entered a place it'd be different item wise (possibly) then the way it was in another of your games..Not change every time. If it changed every time after a few days that'd get kinda Weird, people would just camp outside a couple of days, go back in the town, loot, repeat.

This system would be a refreshing change of pace, but it would need to be orchestrated correctly. If I would take some time to think about this instead of responding impulsively, I might even be able to think of how.

RE: Randomness.

About the items being different (from the ones you found in a previous game) when you enter the town the first time in your game, I agree. Its boring to find that I already know where is every nook and cranny and item in Fallout 2.

Finally someone that feels the same as I do. Different enemies in different armors and with different guns. Of course, balanced so that you don't find some Enclave-level baddies when you don't even know that guns are a big part of game (spear-wielding tribal :) )...and I want more encounters of Raiders fighting Robbers, Gangs, Press Gangs, Yakuza, Mobsters, Merchants, Remnants of the Master's Army, A Ranger Patrol, A Unity Patrol, Prospectors, Farmers, etc...

RE: Randomness.

Randomness is a good idea and so is Xotor's interpritation of the idea.

It would be strange if everyone always had the same items. Perhaps tougher consequences for stealing would balance out the return of items. The more you do it the harder it becomes because special security measures have been applied.

Perhaps a burglar alarm that warns the local police or gusrd would se and summon more guards. I'd have to think about it and right now i feel too lazy.

RE: Randomness.

It's a very good idea. But one thing that confuses me is that if you steal a Stimpack or an apple from the Police men in NCR they start shooting at you. For a Stimpack! Is it just me or is there something wrong with the cops in NCR? Maybe this is an easter egg and a protest against police brutality. They even have a prison. It would be cool if you just have to go to jail for a few days or pay som fines or something. Even in Baldur's gate the guards in Candlekeep didn't kill you, they just made you give them all your money.
