First time out of the vault
hi all, i've just got my brand new copy of Fallout in the mail.

Installed, patched to 1.1, booted it up and i was dissapointed to find the screen all glitchy with this blackout thing.

so i've tried the compatibility options:
run for windows 95, 640x480, 256 colour

didnt work.

i tried disabling the video card in the device manager but it causes the fmv to turn green and quits to the desktop b4 i get to the main menu.

reducing the hardware acceleration under the display properties has no effect until it eventually does the same as disabling the video card.

i've tried disabling all the unnessessary windows services etc.
i've uninstalled and re-installed the video drivers.
all my drivers and system files are up-to-date.

i don't know what i can do next?

my system configuration is as follows:
cpu / AMD Athlon XP 3200+
mobo / MSI KT6 Delta
ram / KINGSTON Hypermax DDR 400 1GB Kit
video/ Geforce 4 MX440
o.s/ Windows XP Professional SP2

I hope you mean DirectX display properties with 'display properties'. Other than that, I can't think of anything right now.
Do you have no problems with other games?

Unfortunately, I believe no cure was devised for this problem under XP. You'll have to press 'C' or 'P' or whatever quite often.

that sucks hardcore considering i've never had the chance to even play this masterpiece.

doe it work under win2k?

I think it's been known to run under all Windows versions, XP and 2K for sure.

when i say run i mean WITHOUT the blackout shit.

Being rude is a great way to get help. But this is what is on the table so far.

I really don't see how that could be construed as "rude", it is a rather annoying problem, and they are being substantially more considerate than many of the Vatted idiots. Lately, that has become a refreshing change. :?

icewizard2k5: Try also doing the manual humongous installation as described in this article; that might be a contributing factor, and that configuration for Fallout 1&2 seems to work the best for the greatest variety of hardware.

For the record: I've recently (M'kay, yesterday) installed Fallout 1 on my ubah-supah P4 Radeon 9000 laptop/ XP, and had severe problems. Crashes, every time I started the game.

I finally found out that, for some obscure reason, the music.dat file in the .config file was set to another folder location that the one on my computer. C:/Games/Fallout/ and not C:/Fallout. Re-writing it with the proper locations of every .dat file in the [system] paragraph resolved the problem.

Hi. :)

I had the same problem until recently (using Win XP Home SP1), when I figured out that it could be activities/animated stuff on the desktop causing it. I realize that it may sound stupid, but hear me out.

First I tried to play it with DC running in the background, which made that ZoneAlarm tray icon blink like crazy (and I got about one blackout every two seconds). So I closed down everything and restarted, with nothing running; not a single blackout.

Later on, I forgot MSN on while I was playing it, and it mysteriously blacked out two times. Upon closing it I noticed that two received messages had popped up. Ze pattern.

So my suggestion is: close down everything before you play it and run it in windows 95 compability mode in 640x480, 256 colors (I haven't changed anything else, except for installing the patch). That's what I do and it works fine for me. :lalala: Hope that helps. :)

You know, I think Torgulf is right... ive never had this problem with windows xp sp2 but I also dont have anything running in the backround either...

I would give it a shot icewizard :)
