So my Asus laptop from 2020 began acting sluggishly so I just reinstalled Windows (11) to get a fresh new start. I use it for internet browsing and gaming so I will install Firefox and Steam.

However I wonder if there are important things to install that I don't know about. Do one use anti-virus software now adays for example? Are there any important configurations to do? Are there stuff I should monitor? I'm in the dark.

Do you need antivirus? Some say it's unnecessary and that you can manage with just Windows Defender...

VPN you use for some special browsing I take it? Or when do you use it?

Windows defender works well enough, especially if you don't download stuff from questionable places.

Vpn is just for torrenting, not needed at all if you don't intend to sail the seas.

Very well then, sounds like I'm all set. I think I will try the Robocop game and then maybe play New Vegas again, so that I can tick that Legion run

I usually open up msconfig and go through the services disabling anything i dont need on that machine. Xbox crap always gets disabled, also remote access crap because im paranoid

They decide entirely what countries to block or not. Besides that, some content might be ip-blocked becuase of copyright and licensing. Like Swedish television has the right to publish a clip from a fotball match, but it can only be watched in Sweden.
